Going Steady: New Singles 8-5-22 – 8-11-22 Reviewed

Immaculate – $NOT – “Blue Moon” has spent the year as a big fave, not this one which is mainstream r&b – B-

One Light (feat. BLEU) – Remix – Bantu, Latto, Maroon 5 – The Zimbabwean Afrobeats top guy with a terrific remix – A-

Bad Decisions (with BTS & Snoop Dogg) – benny blanco – pretty good mainstream pop by the DJ with BTS sounding good and Mike Posner getting a writing credit – B

toxic energy (with The Used) – blackbear – the talented singer songwriter (he started by co-writing Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend”) with an emo pop punker – C+

I Love You More Than You Know (feat. Childish Gambino) – bLAck pARty – I coulda lived without Childish Gambino but Black Party himself is a Frank Ocean/Steve Lacey type sound without the experimentation – B

Times Is Rough – Black Soprano Family, Benny The Butcher, DJ Premier, Heem, B$FRick Hyde – Benny and Griselda’s collective back with some Wu-y boom bap – B-

Beach House – Carly Rae Jepsen – kudos to Canadian Carly Rae Jepsen who escaped from one hit wonder years ago and returns with a fine blues garage rock goes pop – B

STAYING ALIVE (feat. Drake & Lil Baby) – DJ Khaled – YES THAT ONE IS SAMPLED but just the hook with the tune quietened out – C+

Ce Soir – Duckwrth, Syd – alt r&b and a goodie, Syd is excellent as well – B+

Can’t Be Us – Headie One, Abra Cadabra, Bandokay – UK Drill, great rapping by a top rapper

Freakout/Release – Hot Chip – Daft Punk meets r&b and a strong bassline – B

All She Wanna Do (with Saweetie) – John Legend – well done John, you ruined a Saweetie feature – C

Twin Flame – KAYTRANADA, Anderson .Paak – these guys have one thing in common, they both lost me after awful live performances, but at least Leon Bridges isn’t around as well – C+

MATERIAL GWORRLLLLLLLL! – Madonna, Saucy Santana – so far these remixes have been first rate and this hyper pop dream fever is better than that – A-

Blonde – Maisie Peters – the English singer songwriter with a pop blast that is the strongest since “As It Was” – A-

On GOD [Feat. Freddie Gibbs, A-Trak] – Meechy Darko – A-Trak remains a huge DJ and Freddie old school Major, and Meechy was with Flatbush Zombies, though the sum is less than the parts – B-

Local God – Panic! At The Disco – it is a long time since death of a bachelor and none of the singles make it sound any closer – C

Back of a Truck – Papa’s Bootlegs, Live in New York – Regina Spektor – this is a live take from her first album and man is it everything she isn’t now in one bluesy beauty – B+

Lost – XXV – Robbie Williams – A new song from an upcoming greatest hits sounds very much like the former boyband balladeer and English celebrity – B

Fantasy File – Ryan Adams – Adams opens a new chapter with an old sound, 60s style Motown – B+

Alone on a Hill – Silversun Pickups – alty atmospheric rock, produced by Butch Vig – B-

Cum On Feel the Noize (Alive! At Reading) – Live – Slade from 1980 so just past the peak – B

I’ll Keep It with Mine – Susanna Hoffs – nice Dylan take from the Bangle, sweet and maximalist addition on the strings – B+

Happiness – The 1975 – pretty odd track with a catchy four on the floor added to rock-y backing – B

Human – The Holtzmann Effect – 90s style hard rock with a touch of Eddie Vedder in the singing – B+

boy – The Killers – it’s alright I guess, the chorus way overblown – C+

Best Friends – Remix – The Weeknd, Summer Walker – ATL’s Summer Walker is a major r&b singer (I was thisclose to going to see her on Saturday) and this is a gorgeous track – A-

LORD FORGIVE ME – Tobe Nwigwe, EARTHGANG, Fat Nwigwe, Pharrell Williams – some major players join the Texan Christian rapper on something alright considering genre – C+

Big 14 (feat. Offset & Moneybagg Yo) – Trippie Redd – typical but powerful trap rap violence – B

hover like a GODDESS – WILLOW – pretty good pop uink with soulful singing, I am still pissed she didn’t open for Machine Gun Kelly when he was at MSG – B

The Emperor – YUNGBLUD – sounds like Muse with a clever hook – B
