Going Steady: New Singles 8-25-23 – 8-31-23 Reviewed

I Smoked Away My Brain (I’m God x Demons Mashup) (feat. Imogen Heap & Clams Casino) – A$AP Rocky – Imogen Heap? Really? This is a pretty good, drugged up, emo autotuned in the choruses, the negative effects of hallucinogens – B+

Venus – Boys Noize Rework Edit – Bananarama – after catching the master producer and DJ from Germany at a rave I was a believer in his powerful house sound, and he does Bananarama well here – B

How I Learned To Pray (feat. Luke Combs) – Charlie Worsham – you want a great country song about praying? try Iris Dement’s “The Night I Learnt Not To Pray” . All these latter day small towning, god praying country bumpkins won’t cut it – C

An Arrow In The Wall – Death Cab for Cutie – Gibbard has never written a song I’ve liked and he hasn’t started here – C-

Let It Be (feat. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr) – Dolly Parton – the track has always been Macca at his lachrymose worse and this loud, somewhat aggressive take (because, you know, Dolly is doing a rock album) and between her and Paulie over singing and Ringo, well, if it wasn’t Ringo drumming could you tell the difference?, it’s just a lousy cover – D

Notes From A Wrist – d4vd – he sounds like he has just snorted some smack and it is slowing him so much he is terrified there is a taste of fentanyl in it – B-

Deep In The Night – Future Islands – one of the best indie bands, here they maintain a very late night mood on a beauty – A-

Perhaps – Guns N’ Roses – a new GNR? And a pretty good one, much closer to late 90s metal with a glammy edge; the tenor is of a huge, riff monster, used to be this and now it’s that – B

Fall In Love – Icona Pop – in the 2010s I had the dance duo pegged for big time status with the Charli xcx hit “I Love It” but it didn’t happen. This might – B

Jeans – Jessie Reyez, Miguel – no longer a revelation, this is still first right r&b not harmed by Miguel – B+

Because of You – 2023 – k.d. lang- Arthur Hammerstein and Dudley Wilkinson composed the original standard and Tony Bennett made a hit of it, Lang covers it again as a tribute to Tony – B+

Tempo – Marshmello, Young Miko – the cool breeze DJ taps into Latin-Trap – B

Rich Men North of Richmond – Oliver Anthony Music – clearly, I am not gonna be down with hillbillies in the West whinging about welfare milk, but if it was a good song I would forgive its self-pitying nonsense strumalong, should be perfect at the campfire for racist scum – C-

Call Your Friends – Rod Wave – his last album went to # 1 and stayed there, a beautiful baritone with echoes of Khalid with an axiom which if it didn’t sound so gorgeous would be a cliche: “life’s too short for grudges”. The story is a heartbreaker of stardom and ego dynamiting true love – A-

So You Are Tired – Sufjan Stevens – gentle as a summer shower, whispered and beautiful and a return to the Sufjan we loved on Carrie And Lowell. A true return to form – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-

Get Enough – Sun June – a small but lovely indie folk rocker, the guitar solo in the outro is lovely – B+

Alphabet City – The National, Robert Ames – not bad, completely generic The National, but significantly better than the other song they dropped with it – B-

Seasons – Thirty Seconds To Mars – Jared Leto’s band… meh – C

Boyfriend – Usher – remember when Usher was the next Michael Jackson? Neither does he – C+

Fear Love – Yemi Alade – too electronic for Yemi’s skill set, the 808 is immensely irritating… but it is still Yemi and the background solo is lovely – B+
