Going Steady: New Singles 7-8-22 – 7-14-22 Reviewed

MS PORTER (feat. Night Lovell) – $NOT – earlier this year $not killed it with the terrific “Blue Moon” – this one isn’t as good but as autotuned hip hop goes it does the job – B

Pharmacist – Alvvays – five years after the sophomore album, Alvvays, the pop rock, jingle jangle, indie band return with two minutes of guitar bliss out – B+

The Devil is Human – AURORA – “We get sexualised by the world, and yet shamed for being sexual. They want to possess you and own you, and even decide what you get to do with your own body. We are not free until all of us are free.” So sayeth the Norwegian singer songwriter with the haunted falsetto on a goodie – B

I Love You Honey, Give Me A Beer – Blondie – a little thinner and more mercurial than the rewritten “Go Through It” circa 1980, the demo is from the eagerly anticipated box set – B+

sTraNgeRs – Bring Me The Horizon – perfect exponents of the shitiness that is UK rock – MUST TO AVOID – E

That’s The Way Of The World – Charles Stepney -the late great Chicago producer is being excavated by his three daughters with this lovely jazz-soul fusion instrumental – B+

JUMP (feat. Coast Contra) – Ciara – Lizzo mets 00s r&b plus rap on a winner – B

All Our Pieces – Collective Soul – Ed Rowland’s boys are still here thirty years on, still writing fair to middling hooks on fair to middling pop-soul rock etc – C+

STFU – Digga D – London grime, nice flow for sure but not much more – B

Got Me Good – DNCE – Joe Jonas’s other band had one huge hit “Cake On The Beach” and if they can’t repeat it, songs like this are great placesetters for their energizing live shows – B-
Performed by

TAKE A CHANCE (feat. Anderson .Paak) – DOMi & JD BECK – signed to Paak’s label, the chorus is excellent, the rap isn’t – B-

Two 6’s Upside Down – Dropkick Murphys – adds music to Woody Guthrie words in the Western meets Dublin – B+

Jimmy Eat Shit – Egg Drop Soup – all girl punk band from Los Angeles with a thundering bass on a loud, metal-y track – B+

Forces of Victory – Gogol Bordello – Ukrainian gypsy band joins with their Kiev peers on a protest track – B

Live Life Die Faster (with Kodak Black) – Hotboi – autotuned rap hip hop track on the new and sensitive world of rap, “I feel like dying” is somebodies idea of a hook – B-

Eleanor – Hot Chip – the electronic dance band have been riding on their 00s material since 2008 but that stops here, if the gorgeous, lively and clever track doesn’t hit big it can only be because their time is over – SINGLE OF THE WEEK A-

Missing You – Hunter Hayes -one of his pleasanter singer songwriter tracks, of course it is Hunter Hayes so that isn’t a ringing endorsement – C

That Kind of Life (That Kind of Day) – Jim Lauderdale -the joys of fatherhood – B

Survivors Guilt – Joey Bada$$ – honors Capital Steelz who killed himself nearly ten years ago, on the brutal heartbreaker – B

Guthrie – Julien Baker – a low key, acoustic outtake from her personal best 2021 Little Oblivions – B+

Beautiful Boy – jxdn -dedicated to his best friend who died recently, jxdn, produced by Travis Barker, has a sad and somewhat bigger than you think tribute – B+

MORE – j-hope – the BTS pretty boy with a hard screaming and burning techno song – B

Brown Eyes Baby – Keith Urban – it wasn’t Lil Durk who proved that Morgan Wallen was out of cancelled hell, it is Keith, certainly an elder statesman of country by now, performing a song Wallen co-wrote, nothing special but the guitar is nice – B-

RUN [Feat. Young Thug] – Killer Mike – better by himself than as half of Run The Jewels, “Run” is Killer Mike’s best work since “Rap Music” and the opposite of bullshit – A

Any Attack – Lecrae, 1K Phew – the Christian rapper is best in class, if we must get force-fed Jesus, by all means let it be Lecrae – B+

NO MÁS (feat. Quavo, J. Balvin, Anitta, and Pharrell) – Murda Beatz – the 27 year old Canadian delves into Latin Trap to very fine effect – B+

In The UK – NLE Choppa – the 18 year old Shotta flow has a terrific flow on this speedy and hard beat goodie – B

Blab Sabbath Lathe of Maiden – of Montreal – get it? Not that it matters if you don’t on the always obscurant Kevin Barnes – C

GMT – Oliver Sim – what is Van Dykes Park doing on the XX guys song? This is his fifth release off his solo album and it is a touch anemic but not bad with a clever lyric (“I’m on Greenwich Mean Time, missing you’) – – B

Two Doors Down (feat. Dolly Parton) – Positive Vibrations – a superb reggae track featuring Dolly who can sing reggae as though it is country and anything as though it’s Dolly – B+

PLASTIC – Pussy Riot, ILOVEMAKONNEN – sometimes it is hard to remember how daring riot grrls Pussy Riot are, facing up to the monstrous Putin is not for the faint hearted and even when they get out of prison it doesn’t mean they are safe from the Russians penchant of finding their opponents and poisoning them, this isn’t bad anyway – B

Under the Sun – RZA, Bobby Digital – under his Bobby Digital guise this Western track is unique – C+

Part Of The Band – The 1975 – adds strings to folk rock on an odd track and the first off the upcoming album which could be major – B+

Give Me Mercy – The Cult – typical goth metal anthem – B-

Cold Heart – The Kooks – typical Kooks track, filled with unfulfilled: they are like an English band that failed to crack the States and then failed to crack the UK – C

(Remember Me) I’m the One Who Loves You – Watkins Family Hour – featuring Fiona Apple on backing vocals – A-
