Going Steady: New Singles 7-20-18 – 7-26-18 Reviewed

Accusations – 070 Shake – You think you don’t know the alt-r&b singer with a raspy and power drill voice, but she was on Pusha T’s “Santeria” and Ye’s “Violent Crimes” -two terrific songs. So now you and everybody knows who she is and this is a terrific r&b song with a world beating vocal that digs into the foreground… one of Kanye’s Wyoming sessions song – B+

FEFE – 6ix9ine, Nicki Minaj, Murda Beatz – “King Of New York” 6ix9ine almost became “killed In New York” after flashing $700K worth of bling and carrying 20K in cash, his pretty face was beaten badly and he ended up running to the police. The next day this very arty, beat crazy, release high lighted by a Nicki, who is all on the clickety clackity beat and 6ix who is relatively restrained – B+

Deadcrush (feat. Danny Brown) – Alchemist x Trooko Version – alt-J, Danny Brown, The Alchemist – I like alt-j a whole lot though the reason to flip out over this is because we finally get a Danny Brown verse – B+

Hair Cutter – Animal Collective – Wall of sound ambient sound – C+

Medicina – Anitta – The Brazilian superstar uses every percussion element for a dance crazy rump a bump track – B

Heavyweight Sound (feat. RD) – Bassnectar, Jantsen, RD – Four years since Noise Vs Beauty, the DJ’s masterpiece and two since his last release, this is as good as EDM gets because Bassnectar never let’s himself be distracted by the song and puts everything at the service of the beat, which is at service to the bass… including the vocals which is awesomely bizarre – B+

Zooted (feat. French Montana & Farruko) – Becky G, French Montana, Farruko – The line between reggaetón and rap continues to grow ever thinner and here it disappears as Becky G performs in English – B+

you should see me in a crown – Billie Eilish -the 16 year old pop star has another slice of bad mood electronica to her name – B

1998 TRUMAN – BROCKHAMPTON – The rapping is pretty good, strong flow, not boy bandy at all – B-

Wanderer – Cat Power – A minute plus of acapella dream stuff – B

65th & Ingleside – Chance the Rapper – The best of the four recent releases is also the most effortlessly romantic and sweet natured, the address is where he first lived with his fiancée and Chance says goodbye to his past history for his new life and family – A

I Might Need Security – Chance the Rapper – The hook, a Jamie Foxx sample, is ace, and the song is as clear a political statement as you will hear from a rapper (though more local than we are used to), I assume his first move before he seriously enters the body politics – A-

Wala Cam – Chance the Rapper, Supa Bwe, Forever Band – “Mamma, mamma, mamma mia, tell me what your momma feeds you…” Chance with a good line in patter – A-

Work Out – Chance the Rapper – Rapper isn’t tempted by exes if the risk is having to negotiate custody of his daughter – A-

Level Up – Ciara – Chick crunk, hot stuff as well – B+

Death of Me – Daughtry – A dreary bummer of a rock ballad – MUST TO AVOID – C-

I Dreamt We Spoke Again – Death Cab for Cutie – A little boring but the guitar lick is addictive – B-

I Am the Hurricane – Dee Snider – Has he learnt nothing in all these years? Glam metal, same as it ever was – B

Raise Your Voice Joyce – Fucked Up – I guess the kids are old enough so four years on they are back with this short and sweet metalcore rocker – B

When The Curtain Falls – Greta Van Fleet – Led Zep influenced in the extreme, hot rockers with tight pants and blues influences via Robert and Jimmy – B-

Natural – Imagine Dragons – Catch em live and leave em on record, big ballads like this are painful – C-

Apple Juice – Jessie Reyez – Nobody sounds remotely like Jessie, with her bruised vocals and singer songwriter confessional near beer r&b. This is her best singing to date which means it is completely great – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-

Million Dollars To Kill Me – Joyce Manor – The boys are all grown up six years into their career -the guitarist is ace, the vocals are iffy – B-

Worth It – Kodaline – Irish rock band, bad Irish rock band – C-

Something Human – Muse – Both slight and overblown, it’s simply a not very good song – C

Tailgate – RaeLynn – Man, I love a twang and she twangs sweet as can be on this country popper – B

ABCD (Friend Zone) – PnB Rock- PnB is a terrific songwriter son of Philadelphia and this is trap 101 with a better than average tuney singsongy weirdness – B

Feel About You (feat. Mapei) – Silk City, Diplo, Mark Ronson, Mapei – The song is a little ordinary, particularly because of its pedigree, but Mapeo has a terrific voice that is both light and deep – B-

Lie To Me – Steve Aoki, Ina Wroldsen – A real disappointment, MOR EDM pop stuff – C

Answer Me, My Love – Swamp Dogg – Swamp Dogg can really sing (and he can really funk and soul as well), it makes his disruptiveness all the better. Except, come on, the Nat King Cole classic didn’t need the disruptive basso stuff – B

Didn’t I – Rod Stewart, Bridget Cady – Last time round we were shocked he could still write songs, this time we are surprised he can still write bad songs – C

Need Some1 – The Prodigy – well past its prime noise merchant – C

Everything – TobyMac – Fuck off, you twat – C

The Only Way (a Song for Mandela) – Tomas Doncker – Doncker invents one of his best hooks from nowhere at all – A-

Sour Diesel – ZAYN – – Zayn has failed to chart the first two songs off his upcoming album, this is a classic badass dance track and should do well… or has that time passed?

Happy Now – Zedd, Elley Duhé – Meh, “The Middle” it ain’t – C
