Going Steady: New Singles 7-14-23 – 7-20-23

Thanksgiving Prayer – A. Savage – John Parrish produced the English folk track sounding song from the lead singer of Parquet Court – B-

Somebody Just Like Me – Bahamas – pleasant country romp with a hook to die for and while it isn’t opening “Opening Act” it still gets the job done – B

What Was I Made For? [From The Motion Picture “Barbie”] – Billie Eilish – aka Sad Barbie as what looks like 2023’s version of “Don’t A Worry Darling” – a show so meta it’s boring…. not unlike this song – C

Seven (feat. Latto) (Explicit Ver.) – BTS. Jung Kook, Latto – nice one with the days of the week a catchy thing, Latto fun and then some, and BTS the world’s worst hiatus – B

start somewhere – Courtney Barnett – the Avant Gardener with a new single off her upcoming instrumental album, it sounds like metallic ambient – C

Save Me The Trouble – Dan + Shay – blues rocker country style from the popular duo – B

Sorry Not Sorry (with Slash) – Rock Version – Demi Lovato – there are two songs that has us forgiving Demi a myriad of sins, one is “Cool For The Summer” and this is a fantastic, loud, Slash slashing barn burning version – A-

Moon River – Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck – the Mancini classic given a gorgeous performance by Clapton and the late great Beck – B+

Room Service – Holly Humberstone – the second single off her next album and, unlike the first, this is a low key beauty with gorgeous overdubbing – B+

S91 – KAROL G – nondescript urban trap – C+

Nothing Compares To You (Feat. Kane Brown) – Mickey Guyton – black country singers are coming up and while I’ve never much liked her, this is a winner (co-written by Bebe Rexha!) as a sort of hybrid big country Americana with a big back beat – B

In My Heart – Confession 2023 – Moby, Gregory Porter, Tchami – kudos to Porter for a fabulous vocal and Moby for dropping the bass where the soul wasn’t overwhelming you – B

i should’ve fucked your brother – Olivia O’Brien – the new world of feminism is better (or at least as good as) new gender nonconformity, Olivia is a badass who knows what she wants from a guy and plans to swap him, a fun idea and a strong , pop track, and miles away from the victim other Rodrigo – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-

Turn Your Phone Off – PinkPantheress, Destroy Lonely – I think she needs Ice Spice although this isn’t terrible, it isn’t great either and at some point needs the follow-up – B-

Turn Yo Clic Up (feat. Future) – Quavo – Takeoff’s Uncle hooks up with Future again and it sounds like Migos circa Culture, or at least a new page on a tremendous loss – B+

The Hard Way – Sid Sriram – Born in India, moved to San Fran and this is supposedly hybrid world but I can’t hear the Indian at all – C+

Rush – Troye Sivan – it sounds like the Scissor Sisters by a bottom to beat out all bottoms, leading the New Romantics to their ultimately sexual hang: the sex bomb bottom – B

Where Does Time Go? – Revisited Version William Shatner – typical over acted monologue – D
