Going Steady: New Singles 7-11-23 – 7-17-23 Reviewed

Disconnect – Becky Hill, Chase & Status – a pleasant slice of old school EDM – B

Fool for You – Blues Traveler – the 1990s two hit wonders with a terrific Curtis Mayfield cover – B

Hot City – Bonnie McKee – the popular songwriter goes on her own with a potential hit, a synth dance pop confection – B+

Country Music Made Me Do It – Carly Pearce – country bubblegum with cute lyric and a smart attitude , plus who can’t love a sound that got ya drunk for the first time, and, my bet, had her leave her virginity in the past – A-

Give Her That – Carrie Underwood – rumor has it that she is one of the nicest celebrities in the business, which still doesn’t help her crap MOR country – C

How We Roll – Ciara, Chris Brown – straight up r&b, Brown on best behavior – B-

Still Gonna Miss You – Colbie Caillat – back in the 00s, Colbie, who’d recorded song with Taylor Swift, seemed poised and in 2011 she made her move and then… she couldn’t quite follow it up. This year’s album of pop ordinaire and the solo here doesn’t change a terrible rhyme that ruins it – C

Different Now – Courtney Barnett, Chastity Belt – On the tenth anniversary of the single, Chastity Belt invited Barnett to join them in a cover and it is a beautiful pop folk endeavor, with acoustic strum and melody to share – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-

SUPPOSED TO BE LOVED (feat. Lil Baby, Future & Lil Uzi Vert) – DJ Khaled – he could get Jesus, John The Baptist and John Lennon on a song and it would still stink – MUST TO AVOID – D-

If I Had Her – Eric Contractor – indie singer songwriter is at his best when moodiest, with a goth Scott Walker meets an even more depressed Roy Orbison. This is a rock song with a steady beat and a lick worth riding. And the voice, of course – B+

adore u – Fred again.., Obongjayar – The Nigerian afrobeats performer meets a master of hyperpop – B+

More Money More Problems – Headie One – if not Stormzy than surely Headie One is the king of (not drill, further back) grime. His flow is excellent and no, it’s not “mo’ money” – B

Tubed”Cheerful Scriptwriting:A Surprising Journey – H.E.R. – 54 seconds of quiet soulfulness – B

Fire of Mercy – Hot Chip, yunè pinku – they broke through in 2006 as an EDM pop band who rode the 2010s but seem lost in the 21st century, on the other hand, Pinku is impressive and seems ready to go pop – C+

Southern and Slow – Luke Bryan – well, it’s not small town but it is an iteration not complete – C+

Middle Ground (feat. Mickey Guyton) – Maroon 5 – big time ballad anthem, painful. PS I don’t much like Mickey either- D+

Number 9 (feat. Lil Yachty) – Miguel – art pop and r&b and some emo thrown in -consider it hyperpop – B+

bad idea right? – Olivia Rodrigo – on the second single of the second album, Olivia gets out of her comfort zone and goes after an ex for post-love sex and post punk yet word, spoken word catchiness – A-

The Loner – Supergrass – the often covered Neil Young track was first covered by Supergrass in 2003, I have no idea why they are doing it again – B-

bigger thën everything – Yeat – hotshot rapper, can add just about anything to his sound and remain rap, this has a piano lick and a drum roll to carry him – B
