Going Steady: New Singles 6-9-23 – 6-15-23 Reviewed

The Hillbillies – Baby Keem, Kendrick Lamar – the sample is Bon Iver’s “PDLIF.” and according to Genius it is a subliminal Drake diss (they are copying his cadence) and a weak lyric – B-

Liquor Store In The Sky (feat. Freddie Gibbs) – BJ The Chicago Kid – excellent song by BJ, good rap from Freddie – B+

Take Two – BTS – hadn’t they taken a break? The seven piece K-Pop look like clones but are they? What do they have to do with it? If Suga quit would anybody care? This is a pretty good placeseter for their Seoul festival in a coupla weeks – B+

A day in the water – Christine and the Queens – a lovely, electronic ballad with haunting synths and an 80s vibe – B

Coco Chanel – Eladio Carrion, Bad Bunny – so great at Gov Ball last week, his current single a hit the way any song with Bad Bunny’s name on it goes to the top, but it’s a strong beat reggaeton and should help cement a new star – A-

Key to the Highway – Live at The Royal Albert Hall – Eric Clapton – fine Big Bill Broonzy cover – B+

John Wayne Was A Nazi – Fucked Up & The Halluci Nation – he was a conservative guy and his politics were ass, but a Nazi? This is definitive agitprop, just a lick in search of a riff and an anti-commercial whatever – C+

Who Told You (feat. Drake) – J Hus – more dancehall than afrobeat but Drake gives a pro lift for the afrobeats star – B

World Class Sinner / I’m A Freak – Lily Rose Depp – has there been a good TV show about fictional bands since The Monkees…? really, the music biz, whether it is Mick Jagger and “Vinyl” or the based upon a popular movie “Daisy Jones & The Six” or for that matter the completely abysmal “The Idol”. This song is so bad it is faux electronics – D+

COCO LOCO – Maluma – pretty straightforward salsa meets reggaeton – B-

Gorilla Guerilla – Extended Mix – Mantra of the Cosmos, Andy Bell, Shaun Ryder, Sshh, Zak Starkey why get together such a supergroup (ssh is Mr and Mrs. Starkey) and do so little with them: you have Ride and you have Happy Mondays, so why not bother with a song? – MUST TO AVOID – D

If You Were Mine – Miranda Lambert, Leon Bridges – two of the more tedious MOR folks known to man with a draggy piece of country whatever – B-

Road to Joy – Bright-Side Mix – Peter Gabriel – that’s Brian Eno producing this fine remix with an addictive VERSE and a spritely on its feet, straight up no chaser, heavy synth hooking goodie – B+

Angel (From Barbie The Album) – PinkPantheress – Bloodpop is the producer, which took me by surprise, for the sound is modern hip hop 101 – B-

I Inside the Old I Dying – PJ Harvey – the great Harvey as alternative folkie with a goth horror – B+

TUYA – ROSALÍA – the woman who opened the doors for Regional Spanish to make inroads in the States, has ended her tour and returns with reggaeton, Japanese instruments, flamenco and gabber techno on the streets of Tokyo on a strange exercise – B

VULGAR (with Madonna) – Sam Smith – another fabulous track for the LGBTQ community during pride, with a backing track that might be looped from “Unholy” – B+

WHAT THE HELL ARE WE DYING FOR ? – Shawn Mendes – an attempt at an anthem, but it is too damn anemic to sell us – C

Quiet Eyes – Sharon Van Etten – L.A. hipsterish bad news – C-

Life Is Beautiful – Thirty Seconds To Mars – abysmal, 808s derived, electronic crap – D
