Going Steady: New Singles 6-16-23 – 6-22-23 Reviewed

I’m Alice – Alice Cooper – two years after his masterful Detroit Stories, this finds legendary Bob Ezrin producer getting out of the way and letting Alice’s glam flag wave – B+

No Angels -Bastille, Ella Eyre – a bizarre reworking of TLC’s “No Scrubs” by the electronic rockers – C+

Five Light Paintings 3 – Brian Eno – so Eno is going on tour and nobody is expecting two hours of “Burning Airlines Gives You So Much More” and that’s good because we are getting exactly what we thought we are getting, two hours of music for very boring films… like this – C

Leave Me Alone – Caity Baser – catchy, pop trivia cleverness – B+

We Don’t Fight Anymore – Carly Pearce, Chris Stapleton – Chris pierces the song and Carly oversings to keep up – C+

Space Jam – Dej Loaf – there are three names at the very top of black, women r&b: Noname, H.E.R. and SZA, Dej is around there but not there, this electronic clap track keeps on promising to move you and failing – C+

Attention – Doja Cat – a haunting piece of self-realization co-written by the guy behind “Sicki Mode”, and Doja adds a fine rap in the middle crucifying Nicki Minaj – B+

Bygones (feat. Rob Halford) – Dolly Parton – the rock and roll hall of fame have a lot to answer for and convincing Dolly she was a rocker is among them. An absolute piece of crap from the woman who once covered “Great Balls Of Fame” – MUST TO AVOID – D-

One Of These Things First – Emeli Sandé – The English singer who never got quite as big as expected is superb on a Nick Drake cover which was never bad and now becomes a coverable thing – A-

Mysterious Love – Geese – post-punk prog plus spoken word middle, I sure hope they’re not the next best thing – C

Bluffin (feat. Lil Baby) – Gucci Mane – Alt trap by two masters, both past their prime – B-

Algorithms – Kasabian – a very pretty rocker with the hook of the week a from the UK rockers – A-

Je veux te graver dans ma vie – Live au Parc des Princes / 20 juin 1993 – Johnny Hallyday, Sylvie Vartan – a completely credible Beatles by the late, great French rocker and the wonderful paramour Sylvie Vartan), Halliday encapsules every reason he is the greatest rocker unknown to English speakers – A-

Don’t Say Love – Leigh-Anne – the Little Mix singer and completely generic pop dance – C

On Broadway – Melissa Etheridge – a little redundant rock out on the Drifters – C+

Darkside Of The Moon – Owenn – Taylor Swift dancer who was given an opening slot at MetLife is a talented if very generic guy, as though in 2023 throwing in an electric guitar makes you edgy – B-

Everybody’s Safe Until… Paris Texas – post-punk art rock – C

I Think About You Daily – Pretenders – Chrissie has that voice, she still does, not range but a depth of feeling that feels like truism. But she has lost the gift of songwriting and this is a moribund song that barely lifts its head – C

Took My Breath Away (feat. Skye Morales) – Trippie Redd – Trippie released 2023’s top rap album early this year and a new single finds him still on the top of his game on this gorgeous rap-emo pop dream track – A-

Standing Water – Wreckless Eric – decades after his last hit and Eric is still a top songwriter, still manages a melodic dream of classic rock plus oddball twang in the DNA. Eric had a terrible pandemic but came out of it with a concept album and this is the second single and it is even better than the instrumental. The album should be a late career highlight except he really hasn’t recorded anything that dipped so low – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A
