Going Steady: New Singles 4-21-23 – 4-27-23 Reviewed

The Dumb Song – AJR – love the horns, the melody is addictive and the lyric sharp, I’ve seen em twice and they are outstanding and perfect when showing us how they construct their indie pop, and this will be magical on stage – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A

Think Of Me – Broadway Trio 2023 – “The Phantom Of The Opera” 2023 Broadway Cast,Andrew Lloyd Webber, Ben Crawford, Emilie Kouatchou, John Riddle – Sir Andrew has had the year from hell, first and worst his son died from cancer at the age of 45, and having lost my nephew in a similar manner I actually do feel his pain, next Bad Cinderella (which I quite liked here) is losing money hand over fist and won’t survive on Broadway, and finally “The Phantom Of The Opera” died after 35 years (I saw it yet again last year from the front row with my niece Kristin Diab) and if this is our memento, with Andrew on piano, it is beautiful – A-

Hard To Love – Bully – The third single off the upcoming indie band’s new album keeps them at the top of their game. This post-punk indie offering has a quasi-psychedelic brilliance that is both captivating and excellent – A-

True love (feat. 070 Shake) – Christine And The queen – The French superstar of indie electronic is so beloved she could be hyper-pop, here we have her ride a computer bop in circles with the wonderful 070 Shake though the song is a little blah – B-

Boat – Ed Sheeran – will somebody please ask Aaron Dessner to sit the fuck down, the boring bastard – C-

Ella Baila Sola – Eslabon Armado, Peso Pluma – the first regional Mexican song to hit the top ten, pleasant enough Mariachi – B

Rescued – Foo Fighter -: The first Foo post Taylor Hawkins is a generic shoulder shrug, with the band losing nothing and gaining little. No announcement on a new drummer yet, this effort feels somewhat lacking – C+

start again – iann dior – he may never get another “Mood” but this is a catchy, well spitted indie only shyboy – B

NEW YORK (CONCEPT DE PARIS) (feat. Gil Scott-Heron) – Jay-Z- With Alicia out and Gil in, the mix and match work well in this goodie – B+

Hey God- John Mellencamp – maybe God can convince him to change his name back to Cougar and record some solid pop rockers – MUST TO AVOID – D+

New Wave – Joker Out, Elvis Costello – an indie rock band from Slovenia with a big time ballad co-sung and co-write by Elvis – C+

Don’t Let The Devil [Feat. thankugoodsir] – Single Version – Killer Mike, El-P – While I’ve always preferred Killer Mike solo, this sounds like a typical Run The Jewels track. It still has its moments – B-

Alone (with Nicki Minaj) – Kim Petras -with “Unholy” turning her into the poster child for the transgendered pop star, she returns with one of our best rappers on a dance blandout – C+

One That Got Away – MUNA – the queer (or do I mean lesbian?) four piece synth pop band have opened for everyone from Harry Styles to Taylor Swift (aka A List) though this slice of generic pop doesn’t explain why – C

I Should Have Married You – Old Dominion – the popular country rockers with a sweet nothing – C+

Tomorrow Never Comes – Rancid – After a six-year hiatus, Tim Armstrong’s boys return at the top of their game with a no-nonsense, riff-heavy winner. It’s a welcome return. – B+

Outlook – The Front Bottom -business as usual, it couldn’t sound anymore like what it is – B-

Numb – The Used – ugh, just dreadful hard rock like it is 2014 – C

Double Fantasy (with Future) – The Weeknd – when did Abel get this indiferent? The bass heavy mood r&b is a loser – C

$WISH ft. G-Eazy and Chance The Rapper – Vic Mensa – Vic’s 39th single is pretty well rapped nothing – C
