Going Steady: New Singles 4-1-22 – 4-7-22 Reviewed

Take My Hand – 5 Seconds of Summer – the second song off the upcoming album is a dog after the very clever “Complete Mess” – C

Playa (feat. H.E.R.) – A Boogie Wit da Hoodie – superior r&b and whenever H.E.R. adds her voice you are probably safe – B

All The Good Times – Angel Olsen – a goodie from Angel has her channeling classic country – A-

The God Hour – A$AP ANT, A$AP Rocky – the A$AP Mob duo with a beautifully rhymed twofer – B+

Moon Over Wichita – Burt Bacharach, Daniel Tashian – 90s style Bacharach at last hurrah time, Tashian is no Costello – B

Top Notch (feat. Fivio Foreign) – City Girls – Miami rap duo sound terrific on a brilliant headslap of a rap, Fivio brings the drill – B+

Cool for the Summer – Sped Up (Nightcore) – Demi Lovato, Speed Radio – Demi’s best song as sung by chipmunks – D+

Leave You Alone – Ella Mai – the “Boo’d Up” singer with a mid tempo r&b track – B

cinderella’s dead – EMELINE – welcome to noir-pop where Emeline reasserts herself on a goth-y sounding electronic pop track – B

Sirens (feat. Caroline Polachek) – Flume – the electronic friend of Disclosure with a song that, mostly because of Polachek’s remarkable vocal performance doctored beyond recognition, is hyper-pop neither hyper nor very pop – B+

Ice Cream (feat. Rick Ross) – Freddie Gibbs – the other son of Gary, Indiana, is one of the best pure rap OGs around and Rick kills his verse, a great match of rappers – B+

As It Was – Harry Styles – the best bridge ever for the best song of the year: “Go home, get ahead, light-speed internet, I don’t wanna talk about the way that it was” – A

STILL BREATHING – HEALTH, EKKSTACY – the death metal band and the high digital teen producer, with a quiet simmer and also a snooze – C

God Made Airplanes – Jason Aldean – a lousy country rocker – C-

Ye Not Crazy – Joyner Lucas – congrats to Joyner for a first rate track in support of Ye, a terrific producer with a fair to middling flow but this is a great song and a worthy tribute to the GOAT Kanye West – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-

up at night (feat. justin bieber) – Kehlani – neo-R&B and Justin sounds pretty good but we expect a wilder sound from Kehlani – C+

Nightfalls – Keith Urban – Greg Fucking Kirstin co-wrote this piece of product – D+

DEAR MAMA – King Kuku, Yemi Alade – a soft Afro pop tribute to mother – B

Big Energy (feat. DJ Khaled) – Remix – Latto, Mariah Carey – a terrific remix from the The Rap Game winner and it sounds terrific, including Mariah who has that voice but tones it down on “Fantasy” and Tom Tom Club’s biggest hit – B
P

C’Mon You Know – Liam Gallagher – Liam has that voice but everything he does sounds like Definitely Maybe for morons – C+

In My Head – Lil Tjay – this is the hearthrob by the numbers, autotune singing, soft flow, emo pop emotions – B

Basement Superstar – London Mars – the moid-American woman, raised in the Church, sounds like a MGK wannabe – B-

12th of June – Lyle Lovett -sure it’s pretty, it is also slow and boring Americana, I am happy he loves his family… actually, I don’t really care and after a decade we deserved a lot better – C

Heart So Big – Matoma, Arizona – electronic and synthy Americana – C+

Strange Game – From The ATV+ Original Series “Slow Horses” – Mick Jagger – from the new series about disgraced former spies, Jagger joins the misfits with a slow blues, and no it isn’t “Memo From Turner” but that’s a hellish high song to be compared to – B

When You’re Gone – Shawn Mendes – a nothing much EDM pop track – C

CYBAH (feat. Lucky Daye) – The Internet leader has been circling a major breakthrough and this neo-r&b is a ridiculously clever arrangement of digital sounds and deep beats – B+

It’s Raining – Superorganism, Dylan Cartlidge, Stephen Malkmus – J-Pop UK indie pop blah weirdness – C

Hayya Hayya (Better Together) – Music from the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Official Soundtrack – Trinidad Cardona, Aisha, DaVido – nice gig for the teenage rapper singer from Arizona, but it is no Shakira – B-

ROSE STREET – Vince Staples – the shock here is that it is simple and spaced single that moves between giving flowers to a girl and putting roses on a homies grave – A-

Tip The Surgeon – Young M.A. one of our best rappers fucks with gender and lesbianism and words and mixes them up with remarkable consistency – B+
