Going Steady: New Singles 3-17-23 – 3-23-23 Reviewed

Nobody – Avenged Sevenfold – live they can get down and dirty, on record they are Soundgardenish rock and not that great at it – C

Big Big Love – Belinda Carlisle – a Diane Warren joint and very 80s style catchy pop rocker – B

Justice for All – Donald J. Trump, J6 Prison Choir – I wonder how many years the prisoners got off their time for singing on this nauseating get together – Trump is to sincerity what Biden is to dexterity and hearing his unctuous, fake speaking voice is terrifying. Quite possibly the single worse recording of all time – F

All Falls Down – Alonestar, Ed Sheeran, Jethro Sheeran, Rick Live – Alonestar aka Jethro, aka Ed’s cousin, with a heavy DJ weirdness – C+

Lean Beef Patty – JPEGMAFIA, Danny Brown – two faves on the rap circuit, the beautiful and intense experimental art rapper and the rapper who if he concentrated would be one of the biggest, even if this ain’t great – B-

this is what losing someone feels like – JVKE – lo fi and bedroom heartbreaker and really simple and pretty – B

How I’m Feeling Now – Lewis Capaldi – mostly just strummed guitar but a real good one and Lewis doesn’t do his usual and blow the bridge, it gets louder but it doesn’t die – B

Open Invitation – Lou Reed – a New Sensations outtake about the joys of tai-chi, and a good if minor add to his catalog – B-

5 Leaf Clover – Luke Combs – in time for 3/17, Luke adds some Irish jig feeling to a goodie not great-y – B

To The Floor – Demo – Matt Berry – if all Matt had ever done was “What We Do In The Shadows” he would be a 21st century illumination, this is a demo take for the tenth anniversary Kill The Wolf and nothing much – B-

Where I Go (feat. H.E.R.) – NXworries – I first heard Anderson .Paak as part of this wonderful and soulful (and playful) duo and better than with Bruno Mars or solo, H.E.R. is unobtrusive but her backing vocals make the track – A-

So Far Apart – Parker Millsap – not unpleasant folk rocker with electronic beats – B-

Pretend I Never Happened – Paula Nelson, Willie Nelson – Paula is Willie’s 53 year old daughter and Willie wrote this pleasant little country track very well sung and produced by divorcee Bruce Robison who deserves a quick kick for losing Kelly – B

No Sleep – Regard, Ella Henderson – Regard is Robyn’s buddy, Ella is a UK EDM singer. and the song is pretty straightforward dance – B

After Midnight (feat. Clairo) – Phoenix – Phoenix have never quite managed the follow up to Wolfgang Amadeus, this is pleasant indie but no more – B-

Us Against the World – Remix – Strandz, Digga Dee – a great remix, UK drill rapper Digga Dee is on fire and the song is where dance meets rap, it is like a change in the drill direction – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-

All Of The Girls You Loved Before – Taylor Swift – this is an outtake from no one’s favorite TayTay, Lover, and it is slight but fine romance plodder – B

Take the World Apart – Yusuf / Cat Stevens – I enjoyed two of Yusuf’s solo albums very much, but this isn’t quite that as it quietly swings like a lullaby with schizophrenia… not bad but not “Midday (Avoid The City After Dark)” – B

Parody – Yves Tumor – an electronic search and ye shall find – B
