Going Steady: New Singles 12-9-22 – 12-15-22 Reviewed

This is the time of the year when pop music goes sleepy by till late January, more or less, so don’t blame laziness if there aren’t as many singles reviewed…

Pumpkin Seeds – Aesop Rock, Blockhead, Lupe Fiasco – the old timer rapper using a simple backing track like the incidental music before the murder scene in a movie and Aesop spitting it out with nothing but power – B+

Little Drummer Boy – Alanis Morissette – straight forward take, though I’d still go with Joan Jett’s – B-

Atopos – sideproject Remix – Björk – with Fossara Bjork reached the place where her music had become all but impenetrable and really, she doesn’t have to be. This sounds well bizarre and yet there is some form of Arca here -something just not what other things are – B

Hot Shit (feat. Ye & Lil Durk) – Cardi B – a lesser effort by the great rapper, Ye saves her and if Cardi doesn’t have an awesome video she may have a problem – B-

Girl Like Me – Dove Cameron – during her low energy set at Jingle Ball on 12-9, this old Edwyn Collins hit killed – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-

Skinny Ape – Gorillaz – a mix of lo fi Blur and solo Damon with a better than usual song, a very rare winner – B

Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd – Lana Del Rey – Lana remembers the softcore SoCal 1970s including the great Harry Nilsson, who she samples – B+

Blessing – Lil Tecca – maybe a touch too much autotune but a gorgeous song from the local talent with a first rate emorap, a real treat – A-

Don’t Ever Disrespect Me – Nems – Ghostface Killah, Scram Jones – some Wu-y Boom Bap and moody backing – B

The News – Paramore – the second single isn’t melodic enough for emo and not astringent enough for post-punk – C+

A Nonsense Christmas – Sabrina Carpenter – the singer songwriter with a rewrite of her pretty song – B+

Sea Lions – Samia – at Gov Ball last June Samia was the best performer I saw, so why this boring, Angel Olsen type, indie folk? – C

Paris Blues – The Doors – “An original blues song written by the band; the track was recorded during one of the band’s recording sessions for either The Soft Parade or L.A. Woman (no one seems to remember). The master tape of the song was lost and the only surviving copy was given to Doors’ keyboardist Ray Manzarek. Sadly, this copy was partially damaged by his son Pablo (a toddler at the time), who recorded over a few short parts. Now, through some creative editing, the song has been rescued from obscurity for the new album.” Jim seems a little first take but the blues is the blues and it’s a good shot of blues – B

I Want A Dog – Weezer – they go from piece of crap to piece of crap – C-

Miss My Dawgs (with Lil Wayne) – YG – half of rap feels like lamentations for fallen brothers in arm. This is in memory of YG’s friend and rapper Slim 400… and not Yeezy’s song of the same name – B
