Going Steady: New Singles 12-24-21 – 1-6-22

A touch of housekeeping here, just catching up on some missed singles over the last two weeks…

When I’m Gone (with Katy Perry) – Alesso, the Swedish EDM producer, has given Katy the new song for her Las Vegas residency, and it is the sort of galloping, generic track you once got from Avicii a couple of years before it became a cliche. This is harder dance than most but uses just about nothing we love about Katy – C

Holy Water – Brett Eldredge – there was a time, maybe four years ago, this would’ve been a major disappointed, but on 2021 Brett is passed matterring and this country-spiritual-gossip tinge is overwhelmed and terrible – MUST TO AVOID – D+

Peru – Fireboy DML, Ed Sheeran – the Nigerian Afrobeats guy released this to acclaim back in July and now he has Ed Sheeran jumping on it, but Ed doesn’t really add anything. It is still a fun track – B+

Wait – Flo Rida – by an odd coincidence, the same month The Marvelette’s Wanda Young passed, Flo used the hook to “Please Mr. Postman” very effectively – A-

Discoteca – IAmChino, Pitbull – Latin American disco – B

Chasing Rainbows – John Mellencamp – when John is performing his own, dreary Americana blues and country crap with politics thrown in i want to bitch slap him, but this song is better (it is specifically better than that song last year with Springsteen), this is a melodic classic strummer – B+

Y’all Means All – from Season 6 of Queer Eye – Miranda Lambert – a deep South primer, as catchy and clever as Miranda has done in years though what it has to do with Queer Eye -I guess the fashion label stuff, nice harp break – B+

Women And Wives – Studio Outtake – Paul McCartney -based upon Macca’s piano, can’t say it helps – C

Win Anyway – WALK THE MOON – the pop indie guys from Cincinnati have been trying to get back to the top since, wow, since 2015. Catchy without being special – B-
