Going Steady: New Singles 12-17-21 – 12-23-21 Reviewed

By Any Means – 6LACK – back in 2018, Ricardo (aka 6lack) was on the cusp of breaking huge, but even the award winning feature on a Normani track didn’t do the trick. Neither will this bluesy downer saved by some strong rhymes – B

Rent Free – 6LACK – catchy yet despondent neo-R&B – B

More Than Friends – 24kGoldn – it’s not “Mood,” that much is true, but this reworking of the late Biz Markie’s classic should be huge – A-

Poison – Aaliyah, The Weeknd – Apparently something has given via the Aaliyah estate, first all her recordings dropped onto streaming service, and next up is a tribute album. Here is the first single, and Abel has a voice that goes very well with the much missed singer – B+

I Dive Pt 1 – And So I Watch You from Afar – The Irish electronic art band at their most melodic on a song so well constructed it is textured melody instrumental – B

II Dive Pt 2 – And So I Watch You from Afar -the song gets louder and, contrariwise, more haunting – B

Walker – Animal Collective – their first album of new material in six years second drop song is an album track of course, but the harmonies will open your ears and not as difficult to penetrate as some of their other work – B+

Hallelujah – Azure Ray – sure it’s lovely but of all the things the world needs, this overcovered Leonard Cohen isn’t it – B

edamame (feat. Rich Brian) – Diplo Remix – bbno$ – bbno$ is a rapper from Canada although on this remix he hangs back a little because the beats are so fresh and strong and fucked about with by DIplo that he sounds like hyperpop – B

Mr. Pyrex Man – Benny The Butcher – The Grisalda guy, but is he representing for Dreamsville? Great rap, whatever else it is, “holier than the Vatican” indeed – B+

Leading – Best Coast – will be making an appearance on the upcoming deluxe Always Tomorrow, and pretty gate and somewhat typical in a good way – B+

No Reason – Big Thief – I saw them earlier this year and was so disappointed I couldn’t listen to them for months, but “No Reason” is the sort of song that reminds you why live music isn’t everything and, much like Morgan and hip hop, I uncancel them – B+

Spud Infinity – Big Thief – country Americana plus fiddle, nicely done – B+

Call It Like I See It – Big Time Rush – Remember BTR? They were the Monkees type Nickelodeon band reality show, the sound is NSYNC disco pop and here more r&b – C+

Shmoney (feat. Quavo & Rowdy Rebel) – Bobby Shmurda – Murder? Shmurda got seven years for possession of a firearm and conspiracy to commit murder. Released from prison this year, he was one of the better things about Meek Mill’s MSG gig and this ode to currency is pretty good – B

Love & Validation – Boys Noize, Kelsey Lu – the terrific German DJ adds a Goth feel to the electronic groove – B

Santa Bring My Baby Back (To Me) – Brando’s Lair – Jeremy Cohen’s bass is thudding in the background and gives the cover a strong swing without overpowering the joyful hookiness of the classic – A

B. D’OR (feat. Wizkid) – Burna Boy – I am seriously eyeballing Burna Boys MSG gig in April, though this afro-beats go electronic track isn’t the song to start with – B

Pesadilla – Camilo – it isn’t “KESI” but it is sure good from the Colombian pop singer – A-

Time&Space – Chanel West Coast, ill Nicky – I interviewed Chanel TWICE (here is one) and remain a huge fan, her latest is pop-rap and a goodie – B+

We Up (feat. DMX) – Chris Webby – The Connecticut rapper is the only person smart enough to sample DMX (on the hook) lately – B+

Changes – 2021 Alternative Mix – David Bowie – a useless remix of one of Bowie’s greatest moments – A

This City Loves You Back – Del Amitri – indie sounding blues rockers – B

Ring The Alarm – Habstrakt Remix – DJ Snake, Habstrakt, Malaa – The French DJ who reinvented crunk for us years ago is always worth a lister, and this remix is a beat concerto – B+

Go It Alone (From Rumble) – Joe Jonas – Joe has a lot of brownie points to use up after his terrific performance with his brothers earlier this year, and he doesn’t waste them on this goodie dance track about… wrestling monsters – B+

I Wish (feat. Mabel) – VIP Mix – Joel Corry, Mabel, VIP – Mabel is the EDM singer of choice in 2021 and her own “Let Them Know” is the best disco song of the year, Joel is a hit making machine and this is a hit – B

Closure – Kodak Black – Kodak is not the star he deserves to be, a stretch in prison didn’t help, and here he has a wonderful electronic backing track on a dis for a former friend – B+

Sausage Rolls for Everyone – LadBaby, ED Sheeran, Elton John – created in a sausage factory, if this is gonna be a Christmas perennial I’m moving to Riyadh for the season – MUST TO AVOID – D

Broadway Girls (feat. Morgan Wallen) – Lil Durk – so apparently Morgan Wallen is out of cancelled hell, adding the chorus to the popular Lil Baby pal is a get out of jail free card and a good country rap track – A-

Read My Mind – Rebecca Black, Slayyyter – Rebecca was responsbile for “Friday” and Slayyyter is a hyperpop avatar on a nice piece of electronic avant-pop, the working class daydream video is a blast, see below – B

M&M (with Future feat. Lil Baby) – Rvssian – Rvssian is a dancehall producer byt here he gets his Atlanta trap on with two of the top performer – B+

The Best Part of Life – SAINt JHN – he might not have another “Roses” in him, but he makes proper songs and excels at emo rap, here without the rap – B

Follow Me – Sam Feldt, Rita Ora doesn’t Sam Feldt sound like a country guy? He is a touch EDM guy and Rita remains Rita on a generic dance track – B-

Bless The Telephone – serpentwithfeet, StringCandy – with a top ten album and a top ten EP in 21, Josiah Wise has had a career year, and next March he will be proving he can do it on stage (I already know that after catching him with Bjork three years ago) and here he is, with a cover of the great and sweet voiced Labi Siffre, he still manages to steal a somewhat loaded week – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A

Love Changes Everything – From The Motion Picture American Underdog – Vince Gill, Mickey Guyton – Vince was thisclose to being a George Jones of the 21st century, he has the voice but he doesn’t have the aura. Mickey is black and female – C

Tomorrow – Waxahatchee – a terrible bore on stage, she can certainly write a song – B
