Going Steady: New Singles 11-4-22 – 11-10-22 Reviewed

Life is an Experiment – Cloud Climber Version – Andy Morin, Lee “Scratch” Perry, New Age Doom – a very weird tribute to Perry mixing drone and dub – B

I’m a Mess (with YUNGBLUD) – Avril Lavigne – obviously pop punk and clearly obviously Travis Barker – C

We Are All Insane – AWOLNATION – Aaron Bruno at his catchiest rock pop as lullaby – B

Big Pussy – BROCKHAMPTON – this is one band we miss already but the farewell is Kevin Abstract and then the rest and the jazz intro is a signpost up ahead – B+

It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll (But I Like It) – Brothers Osborne, The War and Treaty – Having survived a John Prine and Leonard Cohen tribute this year, you might not be too keen on this but the hard rock and county roar is so great on this cover I can’t wait for the Stoned Cold Country album (I bet Steve Earle does “Dead Flowers”) – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-

I’ll Be Home For Christmas – Camila Cabello, Cheche Alara – Camilla performed it on “Michael Bublé’s Christmas in the City” special on NBC in 2021 with a Mariachi Band and it sounds terrific – B+

Year of the Tiger – Everclear – seven years after his last album and Art Alexakis has the DNA that brought you “Santa Monica” in tact, but not the skill with a tune – B

Suckerpunch – FLETCHER – another terrific love and sex song from the frisky Fletcher comparing a kiss to the title adjective and punching through the song – B+

Christmas In Dixie – Jason Aldean – the Alabama song is alright unless you’ve ever heard Davitt Sigerson’s vastly (vastly, like hugely) superior “It’s A Big Country” and then it is all very lukewarm – C

Almost Too Early For Christmas (with Dolly Parton) – Jimmy Fallon – Fallon should keep to satire unless this is at least parody, in which case a cliche is not a lyric – D+

Jingle Bell Rock (from the Netflix Film “Falling For Christmas”) – Lindsay Lohan, Ali Tomineek – the movie sounds like a goodie: “the actress plays an unlucky hotel heiress with amnesia, who falls for the charming lodge owner…” YES!!! Count me in even if the song kinda is nothing – C-

Prayin’ In A Deer Stand – Luke Bryan – it isn’t a terrible song but it is an awful lyric, a deer stand is the place from where you kill off the brutal and violent deer with semi-automatic guns. God would be…? Well, I don’t know what It would be, but I know how I feel – MUST TO AVOID – F

Pretty Boy – Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – Somewhat dreadful droney post punk and Johnny Marr doesn’t help – C-

Won’t Keep Me Down (Step Up: Season 3, Original Soundtrack) – Ne-Yo – it is hard not to love the charming r&b singer and while this ain’t much it ain’t bad – B-

Went Deaf – NoCap – somewhere between rap and r&b, NoCap sing speaks with an emotional power that pulls the song up – B+

GMT – Wolfgang Tillmans / Marc Krether Remix – Oliver Sim – One of the disappointments of the year was Oliver cancelling his solo tour and this terrific EDM and electronic remix tells you a little of what is missed – A-

dialtone. – Phony Ppl – sounds like Anderson .Paak, I mean Paak circa Malibu – B

Never Gonna Not Dance Again – P!nk, Mattias Bylund – Max Martin (and partner Shellback) is so 2010s he deserves to be up there with Ye and TayTay when you discuss the decade, and here the superstar producers return with P!nk on a cavalcade of hooks – B

My Mind & Me – Selena Gomez – not in the same realm as Rare perhaps, but it repays listening with an ear candy wrapped in some real, deep confessional – B+

Lifetime – SG Lewis – not bad r&b UK style from the popular producer – B

miles (feat. Lil Uzi Vert) – skaiwater – love that “oh my god” hook – B+

10:35 – Tiesto, Tate McRae – straight forward dance by Ms. Rubberband and the superstar DJ – C+

Call Me the Breeze – Live at the Fillmore, 1997 – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers -tractable, chugalug, country JJ Cale cover – B+

Crying In The Rain – Live On The Ed Sullivan Show, February 18, 1962 – The Everly Brothers – beautifully handled though I am sodded if I can figure out who is releasing these tracks from the vault? There are 11 songs on a Best of so maybe they are just filling the tank? – B+

Fallout – Yo La Tengo – nice Beatles quote at the top with an edgy alty rock sound – B
