Going Steady: New Singles 11-30-18 – 12-5-6 Reviewed

Phone Wallet Keys – Adam Sandler – The stand up plus music was brutal on Netflix and this crap is why – C-

Trash Bat – AFI – They’ve been around forever, and sound much, much worse on this post-punk emo hardcore then back in their youth- D+

No Tengo Nada – Alejandro Sanz – This is why it took reggaetón to knock latin pop into shape, old time overwrought balladeering – C-

Requiem For A Private War – Annie Lennox – From a movie soundtrack, just completely horrible – MUST TO AVOID – D+

Anyways – Arctic Monkeys – An outtake off the album, a clever album that has seriously failed to last the year, “Anyways” is a mediocre outtake – B-

Sweet But Psycho – Ava Maria – Pop singer built for EDM, where she is just good enough to keep a pop contraption like this afloat – B-

Nobody Else – Axwell – Pure house from the soon to be reunited Swedish House Mafia DJ – B

Songbird – Bailey Bryan – Sweet singer songwriter, but a little bland – C+

Black Snake, Mojave Blues – Balton – A little poppy for garage psychedelia, but it works anyway – B

Better To Lie -benny blanco, jesse, Swae Lee – Hot shot producer is trying to break pop with another single, this won’t cut it – C+

Catch – Brett Young – “Ticket To LA” was a fluke – C+

My Own Thing – Chance The Rapper – His best song in a coupla years is faux hip hop Gospel imbued with sweetness and a lazy like a river flow – B+

The Man Who Has Everything – Chance The Rapper – R&B tone rap – B-

No One Changes – Conor Oberst – Sounds like old school Bright Eyes, I mean pre-“Wide Awake”… but the magic has gone – B-

Feeling Of Failing – Cheat Codes, Kim Petras – Kim is an interesting, more interesting than Cheat Codes are  – C+

Bipolar – Gucci Mane, Quavo – It isn’t that Gucci doesn’t do a lot of work, it is that he doesn’t work hard; the result is one of our top trap recording artists skating for a year – C+

Made For Now (Latin Version) – Janet Jackson, Daddy Yankee – 80s r&b with a Latin backbeat – C+

Shit Real – Jay Rock, Tee Grizzley – After a lousy live show opening for Kendrick, I was cooler to Jay’s album than most. This is proforma rap – C+

Kelly – Kelly Rowland – Kelly self-portrait is state of the hip hop art for the former Destiny Child – B

All For You – Kid Koala, Trixie Whitley – Canadian DJ makes an ambient mood backing for Trixie’s soulful singing – B

Calling My Spirit – Kodak Black – This guy has a lot on his mind, this is a dowdy and black and white emo-rap without the emo – B+

E-Lo – Los Unidades, Pharrell Williams, Jozzy – World music as dull as ditchwater from Chris Martin and pals – C

Keeper – Lucy Grimble – Christ goes singer songwriter – C-

Nothing Breaks Like A Heart – Mark Ronson, Miley Cyrus – Terrible EDM pop ballad -where’s the song? – MUST TO AVOID – D

Blur (featuring Foster The Children – Mo – FTC are a good pop rock electronic band and Mo is the new EDM pop classicist, this isn’t great but it is good and they mesh well – B

Dejalo – Nacho, Manuel Turizo – This is Venezuelan pop singer Nacho’s baby, and it is as sweet as molasses mid-tempo Latin pop track – B+

Jupiter 4 – Sharon Von Etten – After the epic pop triumph “Comeback Kid,” this is too art it and difficult to penetrate – C+

April In Houston – SWMRS – “Modern music makes me sick and leaves me hungry for some action,” Cole Becker sings on this fine, very fine, slice of punk pop – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-

Christmas Song – Phoebe Bridgers – That’s Jackson Browne singing backup on this original – C+

Walking Away From Love – Steve Mason – blues rocker from the former lead singer of the Beta Band –  B-

Only Water – TEEN –  Teen sisters watch their father die of old age and conclude “I can’t cry out for you if your body’s through / If we’re only only water, aren’t we one in time?” to a gorgeous pop tone – B+

SICKO MODE – Skrillex Remix – Travis Scott – I love Skrillex house bang bang, other people think it just gets in the way – A-

Breach -Trope – Art rockers get their metal on with a twinge of prog – B

Ain’t Gonna Moan No More – Van Morrison – Typical jazzy blues ballad – B

Emo Christmas – Wavves – “Something about Christmas makes me cry…” Me too, it must be the plethora of Yuletide tunes, though Nathan has a small beauty here – B

Best Friend – Live In Antwerp/1972 – Wings – Time has been kind to Wings earliest albums, as proven on  a n outtake cool little rocker – B

Rainberry – Zayn – Zayn has blown right through a ton of good will, this EDM r&b track isn’t bad but won’t help much – B
