Going Steady: New Singles 10-14-16 – 10-20-16

The Stage – Avenged Sevenfold – The more I listen to heavy metal, the more it sounds like prog rock and this sounds only like prog rock, a boring loud trills and low thrills with a castrato on top and tedious solos – D

Letter To The Free – Common – I can’t take Common’s preachifying at any price, this is the sort of song that opens with the Billie Holiday quote that Kanye West buried two years ago. I enjoyed his live performance last week but what he sells so well on stage, is staggeringly self-important on record – C-

Garden – Emeli Sande – Her two song performance last week at Tidal X split down the middle, and this is the half that sucked. A perfect marriage to the Common track, it reeks of self-importance and tedium, like take it because it is good for you – D+

Music – Jojo – Dreary slog of a song, I’d like to take that piano and shove it up her nose.  Worst r&b ever…well, except for Alicia and Norah of course – C-

Drug Dealer – Macklemore – The hook, by one Ariana Deboo, is pretty good, but Macklemore is the absolute pits – C
Don’t Wanna Know – Maroon 5 – Catchy fucker, I wonder if it will break pop. Kendrick isn’t quite right on the rap, too much like business as usual – B-

Broken – Master P – Why is Master P autotuned up the ying yang? This should be just 90s no limit stuff and if it bombs so what? The man is worth 350M? – C

Circles – Pusha T – Another track I loved performed live -at the Meadows, that is bland and obvious on record. Still, the man can rap when he actually gets round to it – C

True Disaster – Tove Lo – As bland as mainstream pop can possibly get – D
