Filmmaker Tom DiCillo Will Release “Lock Him Up” On Wednesday, June 14

Filmmaker Tom DiCillo is an indie legend. Not only he served as director of photography on several of Jim Jarmusch’s films, including the classic “Stranger Than Paradise” and “Coffee and Cigarettes,” but he also directed his own indie films, beginning with his first film, “Johnny Suede” (1991) starring Nick Cave, Catherine Keener and a then totally unknown Brad Pitt. His other films – “Living in Oblivion,” (1995) a dark comedy featuring Steve Buscemi, “Box of Moonlight” (1996) starring John Turturro, “The Real Blonde” (1997) starring Matthew Modine and Catherine Keener, “Double Whammy” (2001) starring Denis Leary, “Delirious” (2006) starring Buscemi, Michael Pitt, and Elvis Costello – cemented his reputation as one of the top indie filmmakers of his generation, internationally recognized and awarded. In 2009, he also directed “When You’re Strange,” a documentary about the rock band The Doors, continuing his connection with music. After all, “Johnny Suede” was about a young man aspiring to be a rock n’ roll star like his idol Ricky Nelson.

But there is even more to the story: just like his friend Jim Jarmusch – a few weeks ago, I saw Jarmusch opening for Iggy Pop with his band Sqürl at the Palladium – DiCillo is a musician. You probably never heard of The Black & Blue Orkestre, but, in 2014, the band posted an entire album on Soundcloud, featuring DiCillo’s baritone vocals (he also wrote the lyrics of the songs). The music is described as “Spaghetti Western Surf and Cinematic Gothic Rockabilly Groove,”

I am unsure if he has released anything else since 2014, but this week is the week. DiCillo is about to release a new song, “Lock Him Up”: But be ready for the world premiere of the video on Wednesday, June 14th. This happens to be on Donald Trump’s birthday, as well as a day after the ex-president’s appearance in federal court, an event that is obviously the talk of every news outlet.

“I’m inviting you all to the Facebook event I’m hosting on the morning of June 14th where the link to the video will be released,” DiCillo wrote. “You’ll be able to watch the complete video, and if you like it, please join me that day in sharing the video with everyone you know.”

“Things are crazy in this country right now. There is a creep of idiocy that is infecting us on every level. And it’s not going away. The only way change happens is if people get involved. So, I decided to get involved.”

“I wrote “Lock Him Up,” inspired by some of the great protest singers of the ’50s. I think crimes have been committed. I think the people who committed those crimes should be in jail.”

“The chords are pretty simple, but I found a rich, crunchy guitar sound that I really liked, and the words just dropped in. I wanted it to have a kind of gospel feel, so I sang low and added my voice higher on the choruses along with some real gospel samples. I played all the instruments and recorded everything in my home studio in about two days.”

“Let’s come together and show Trump how excited we are that it is his birthday. Looking forward to joining you on June 14th.”

You can already watch a video teaser, and even though it is very short, the “Lock Him Up” hook sounds very strong! Watch it below and do not miss the music video release on Wednesday.
