Don’t Get Fooled, Counterfeit Tickets Are Getting Better

There was a mini-scandal at Erykah Badu’s show at Orange County last week. I wasn’t aware of this because I rarely go to the Observatory, but this story seems a bit incredible. Many people who had bought a ticket, a $60 ticket, could not get in, and we are talking about hundreds of fans. According to the OC Weekly, at 9 pm the fire department and cops were already there, the line was not moving, people were getting impatient, and 40 minutes later, the Observatory staff told to the people waiting in line that the show was oversold and refunds were available? What? Are they starting to overbook shows as they do it for airplanes now? I had never heard of such a thing… The author of the article suggested that a lot of people had bought fake tickets online… and many people actually got in with these fake tickets.

Is this even possible? There is actually a fake ticket market, and hundreds of fans buy counterfeit tickets every time there is a sold-out show, you know, one of these sold-out-in-a-flash concerts. However they are usually denied the entry of the concert as these tickets are generally not honored, a their great despair.

According to this already old article in New Times, scalpers were making over $4 million per month on fake tickets in 2011, and according to everything I have read, it is getting worst and this is simply crazy! It took me a minute to make this fake David Bowie ticket, using this website, and of course I don’t think I could fool anyone with this one, but with the printing-at-home-ticket-system, it has to become easier an easier to make fake tickets, while some computer-smart guys have probably a field day to hack barcodes.

Many people got arrested for selling fake Taylor Swift tickets in many cities across the US in 2015, and about 400 fans who bought fake Bruno Mars tickets could not get in at his Hollywood Bowl concert in 2014. The counterfeit game is a big industry, it’s getting worst every year and what happened at the Observatory demonstrates that these counterfeit tickets are getting more and more real. How could the venue be fooled and honor them? So what can we do, avoid eBay and Craiglist? Probably, because don’t count on Ticketmaster or any other ticket makers to act on anything.
