Did You Say Foxygen? They Are About To Drop A New Album

I have heard about Foxygen for more than a year probably and never took the time to properly listen to their music. I even read and write about frontman Sam France’s fight with his ex Elizabeth le Fey aka Globelamp — she wanted everyone to boycott a desert festival they were participating in because of an alleged domestic abuse story and at some point even Sean Lennon got involved — but I continued to ignore Foxygen. The band is about to release new music on January 20th via Jagjaguwar so maybe it’s time to check out who they really are.

The album, ‘Hang’, is not out yet but there is this music video for the song ‘Follow the Leader’ which has been visible for a month already… wait, Follow the Leader… on January 20th, inauguration day? This has to be a simple coincidence! In any case, the music doesn’t sound unfamiliar, and there is youth, dynamism, exuberance, joy and plenty of complicated choreography in this video, and how many young bands use a full orchestrated sound with horns and everything like this one? That’s completely un-digital-age and honestly very retro, it even brings a sort of Van Morrison vibe with Saturday Night Fever poses or Jesus Superstar flower power moves. Plus, had they foreseen the renewed interested in musicals? That’s perfect timing and an interesting video to launch a new album, of course Foxygen are mostly two guys (Jonathan Rado and Sam France) so all these people are back up dancers, but that’s a bold way to say we are here and we are big.

According to Pitchfork, all the songs of the new album wil feature this same symphony orchestra, a group of over 40 musicians conducted by Trey Pollard. Matthew E. White contributed additional arrangements, and the album also features appearances from the Flaming Lips’ Steven Drozd and the Lemon Twigs.

To make it more indie hipster, the album is available as part of a Jagjaguwar bundle, which comes with a flexi-disc featuring demo versions of ‘Follow the Leader’ and ‘On Lankershim’, and if you are among the 50 persons to pre-order it, you will get an autographed piece of sheet music from the recording sessions.

Its great to see you writing about this band. I’ve been listening to them for a few years now in their various incarnations and have mostly been massively impressed by their quirky versatility and knack for bursts of pop, old school soul and wacky psychedelia. I’m going to see them at Union Transfer in March,,,can’t wait. Some of my favorite Foxygn songs are San Francisco, We are the 21sr Century Ambassadors of Peace and Love, Coulda Been my Love. I adore these guys. Even their song titles are cool…”Can’t Contextualize My Mind.” They kind of give me hope for the future of music because so much of it sucks royally.
