At 2 hours and half from Los Angeles or San Diego, 3 hours and half from Las Vegas, the Frank Lloyd Wright–designed Institute of Mentalphysics in Joshua Tree will host the sixth annual Desert Daze during the weekend of October 12th to 15th.
Desert Daze is four days in the desert, four days of music, with an exceptional lineup on three outdoor stages and one indoor stage, and many alternative programming beside music such as workshops, art installation, Q&A’s, film screenings, and events animated by speakers or projection artists.
However, the music alone could certainly keep you busy the entire 4 days, just check out this lineup:
Spiritualized, Courtney Barnett + Kurt Vile And The Sea Lice, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Panda Bear, Hope Sandoval + The Warm Inventions, John Cale, Eagles Of Death Metal, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Thurston Moore Group, The Make-Up, Ariel Pink, Liars, Terry Riley + Gyan Riley, Tortoise, Boris, Allah-Las, Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton, Atlas Sound, La Femme, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Twin Peaks. Khruangbin, The Budos Band, Lee Fields & The Expressions, John Maus, Avey Tare, Ian Svenonius. Deap Vally, Sunflower Bean, Aldous Harding, Weyes Blood, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Drinks (Tim Presley + Cate Le Bon), GØGGS (Ft. Ty Segall, Chris Shaw Of Ex-Cult & Charles Moothart Of CFM/Fuzz), King Woman, MNDSGN, The Babe Rainbow, Holy Wave, Froth, L.A. Witch, Mr Elevator, Jerry Paper, Death Valley Girls, Fever The Ghost, JJUUJJUU, Drugdealer, Celebration, earthlings?, WINTER, Camera, Triptides, Frankie & The Witch Fingers, Dahga Bloom, Prettiest Eyes, Starcrawler, Spaceface, The Creation Factory, Cristopher Cichocki – Circular Dimensions
And if this wasn’t already enough, additional acts will be announced later this month!
It will be extremely hard to make a choice between all these bands, but highlights for me will probably include Eagles of Death Metal who will be right at home in the desert, Hope Sandoval (ex-Mazzy Star), and of course Spiritualized, Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile, GØGGS and so many others.
Phil Pirrone, of the band JJUUJJUU, is the founder of the festival, ‘We’re coming from a similar place as a grandma who makes you pasta sauce and wants you to eat it and really enjoy it,’ he said to the OC Weekly last year, ‘We’re like the festival equivalent to an Italian or Jewish grandmother… The music festival is the meal and we just want you be full and feel good.’ Desert Daze is supposed to be the ‘anti-mega fest’ refuge, the opposite of its giant neighbor Coachella. ‘It’s the festival for people who really love music,’ added Pirrone. ‘You know, the people who’ve made live music their philosophy—Desert Daze is for those kinds of people.’
