“Dead Pool” Reviewed

“Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool.” Got it? Well, this R Rated Marvel Comic hero brought to life with a charming enough performance by Ryan Reynolds which should finally have the world taking him seriously, sure does as Mr. Pool talks nonstop to everyone, including the audience, kills the baddies, fucks his fiancee, and makes a riproaring ass of himself in this business as usual with a twist flick.

It isn’t bad and it could have been great except nothing here feels particularly at risk. It is an action movie like preordained scripture. Reynolds beats up a pizza delivery guy before discovering he has cancer and from there it goes where you expect it to. The definition of a “B Movie” (only two X Men are in the movie because that’s all they could afford, he jokes, but it is true).

If that’s one problem, the other is that the script isn’t remotely witty enough. A puerile mess of dick and ass jokes, there are only so many kicks in the balls you can watch before it is no longer any fun at all. Now the complaints are done with, for what it is, a fun ride action movie with its tongue in its check, it is better than it has any right  to be, the coming attractions drove me crazy for months so I was more than surprised that it has a certain amount of charm to the story.  And with $135M in the bank over the weekend, there will be more.

Grade: B
