As this is the case every year in January, Coachella has announced its lineup, and the three headliners for 2023 are… Bad Bunny, BlackPink, and Frank Ocean. Each year, I become more and more indifferent to the announcement because I never go, because it is too big and because it is way too fashionable for me. This year, I would not go for two good reasons: First, I hate Bad Bunny with a passion (but that’s just me), and second, K-pop is one of the most stereotyped and boring music that exists. Lastly, Frank Ocean is the rare jewel of the bill but he has a history of cancellations that precedes him and in case he cancels again, there will be no Kanye as a substitute this time: Years ago, Ocean canceled his FYF fest appearance, and Kanye took his spot at the last minute, but it is very clear that Kanye is canceled for life.
Whether you think this is the worst Coachella lineup or the best one ever, it is actually all over the place. I remember one year it was all rap and electronic but this time there’s a bit of everything if you take the time to look at the small prints. First, let’s not forget that Bjork, Rosalias (who would have been an interesting choice as a headliner), and Gorillaz are playing… then you also have Blondie, the Chemical Brothers, and probably a few others for the classics. I am also happy for Weyes Blood, Gabriels, Wet Leg, the Linda Lindas, Sudan Archives, and Christine and the Queens (she is quite a performer!) but I don’t care much for Snail Mail, Boygenius, or Kali Uchis. Finally, there are a few acts I could see at the Echoplex on a good Friday night, like The Garden, Destroy Boys, or Romy. But let’s admit it, I don’t know anything about 90% of all these bands.
The presale starts on January 13 here.
