Coachella has already announced its 2018 lineup and it’s not gonna please everyone! First The Weeknd, Eminem and Beyonce are headlining the three days, and if Beyonce was a given since she had canceled last year and was replaced by Lady Gaga, the rest of the line up may have a few points in common with this Rolling Loud festival I attended: 2 weeks ago Migos, Post Malone? It sounds like Rolling Loud hip hop festival! Other notable rappers are obviously headliner Eminem but also Cardi B, Vince Staples, Tyler the Creator, blackbear and BROCKHAMPTON. R&B is also largely represented with The Weeknd, Miguel, Kali Uchis and electronica by Odesza, Jean Michel Jarre (!!), Soulwax, Louis the Child, Chromeo… as well as the unclassifiable Jamiroquai.
Rock & roll is not very much represented (you still have A Perfect Circle though), as it has been the case for several years at Coachella. However there are plenty of indie acts with a few of my favorite ones, such as St. Vincent, The War on Drugs, Alt-J, Portugal. The Man, Fleet Foxes, Angel Olsen, King Krule, Perfume Genius, Moses Sumney, First Aid Kit, the Bronx, the Drums, FIDLAR, LP, Børns, as well as two legends: Chic with Nile Rodgers and David Byrne! And I realize I haven’t noted HAIM, which are incredibly high in the lineup!
But overall, the lineup is very heavy on hip hop and R&B, which certainly represents what kids listen to these days. It’s low on EDM though, not a bad thing as far as I am concerned. If you haven’t followed closely the evolution of Coachella, let’s just say that, 5 years ago, we had The Stones Roses, Blur, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Lou Reed, Modest Mouse, Phoenix, Sigur Ros, XX, new Order, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Vampire Weekend, Social Distortion, Wu-Tang Clam,… Should I continue? The target audience is becoming younger and younger every year.
The festival kicks off on April 13th and then wraps up weekend two on April 22nd.
But I still have to champion the bands I have seen in small clubs in Los Angeles and which made it to Coachella! Congratulations to Magic Giant, Oh Sees, Priests, Sir Sly, Cherry Glazerr, the Buttertones, and the Regrettes!
