Chrissie Hynde’s Disastrous Interview On NPR

lead_960

Sometimes people should give up on interviews and promo stuff, I am sure they end up just looking more obnoxious than they actually are. Chrissie Hynde is continuing her round of interviews to promote her book ‘Reckless, My Life as a Pretender’, and she gave one recently to David Greene for NPR’s Morning Edition, but let’s just say it didn’t go very well. Chrissie sounded tough and angry, mostly on the defensive, and the interviewer had to come up with the controversy surrounding her comments about women and rape, and to Greene’s defense, Chrissie kept repeating she didn’t want to talk about the stories she had written for the book, so what was left? Her other comments and what she had said during interviews… so inevitably, this came up:

David Greene: What you wrote that a lot of people have reacted to is: “Let me assure you that technically speaking, however you want to look at it, this was all my doing, and I take full responsibility.”

Chrissie Hynde : Yeah, that just sounds like common sense to me. You know, no one dragged me into the park in the middle of the night with a gun at my head and forced me to do anything. I went off with these guys of my own volition and, you know, I shouldn’t have. I mean, I was stupid to do that, but I did it, so.

David Greene: There was one comment that you made in an interview about the book, in the Sunday Times of London: “If I’m walking around in my underwear and I’m drunk, who else’s fault can it be?”

Chrissie Hynde: So what are you getting at? Why are you asking me this?

David Greene: I just think a lot of people —

Chrissie Hynde : I don’t understand why there’s — You know what, I don’t care what a lot of people want. You know? I’d rather say, just don’t buy the f****** book, then, if I’ve offended someone. Don’t listen to my records. Cause I’m only telling you my story, I’m not here trying to advise anyone or tell anyone what to do or tell anyone what to think, and I’m not here as a spokesperson for anyone. I’m just telling my story. So the fact that I’ve been — you know, it’s almost like a lynch mob.’

Wow talk about a difficult interviewee! Okay, first she writes a book, writes about a disastrous sex adventure with some biker gang – and whatever she ends up calling it, rape or comatose sex under the influence of a lot of drugs – she makes some controversial statements about the incident… then she becomes all defensive when people asks her questions about it? Plus there is this ‘I am not a spokesperson for anyone’,… ‘I’m just speaking for myself’, as much as I want to believe she is sincere, how can she be so naïve? She is well aware she is a feminist icon, a rock goddess, so of course she is speaking for a lot of people, whatever she likes it or not. Anyway I want to say one thing to defend Chrissie. In these days and age, when everyone is apologizing for a silly tweet, a drunk comment made late at night or any stupid thing they have done and said, she is definitively not an apologizer, and this is so refreshing.

You can listen to the whole interview here.
