Medium Cool: Talk Show Guest For The week of 6-1-15

By Iman Lababedi | May 29, 2015

With Governors Ball happening over the bridge in the Bronx, you’d think the Talk hows would be overloaded with top rock, pop and rap band so scanning this lot and it is a little sorry, right? Ed Sheeran ends his nyc run run on Fallon, My Morning Jacket in LA before they head for NYC, James Corden has half of Oasis but that’s LA a well. Anyway, I’m going with Seth Myers and clean bandit. Why? Because this is the summer of featured singer Jess Glynne -that’s why.

Medium Cool: Goodbye To David Letterman

By Iman Lababedi | May 15, 2015

Will history remember David Letterman? Well, does history remember Johnny Carson, and he was much bigger? Put it this way, working late night television is like being a telivison columnist. Murray Kempton was one of New York’s best and when was the last time you heard his name? Letterman was great and then he wasn’t great and within a coupla years it will be all the two Jimmys and when they retire no one will remember them, indeed, they will remember them even less.

Did you see what I see? While it is true Tom Waits did the talk show rounds back in 2012, even so, Waits on Letterman is gonna be as big as it gets. This will be Waits tenth appearance with Dave since 1983, and it will include an interview which should be as heartbreaking as everything else we’ve seen over the past month.

Medium Cool: Best talk Show Guests For Week Of May 4th, 2015

By Iman Lababedi | May 1, 2015

Letterman is still making the Late Night world roll over and play dead. The Prez leading the pack, with Tina Fey in the middle, and Mumford And Sons and the Dave Matthews Band bringing up the rear, it is all just another reason to tear your eyes away from Fallon for the last two weeks of history. Meanwhile, though, following Blur (and puppy races) this week, look for Noel Gallagher next week. I wonder if Noel will play a gig?

Medium Cool: Best Talk Show Hosts Week Of April 20th, 2015

By Iman Lababedi | April 17, 2015

With barely more than a month left till David Letterman signs off, it should be all David all the time although I really thing between the heart attack and the intern scandal, Letterman began to lose it, and I have found him nearly uwatchable for the past couple of years. The first time I watched Letterman, Marshall Crenshaw was appearing and Letterman ran late because of elevator races… oh to be youg, right? The end of an era, not the way Carson was, but nevertheless…

Medium Cool: Best Talk Show Guests Week Of April, 13th, 2015

Only two things really catch my attention, Jenny Lewis on James Corden and Tyler The Creature on Tavis Smiley. Smiley is a serious culture guy and Tyler can be forced to concentrate so it should be an interesting interview

Medium Cool: Top Chat SHow Guests Week Of April 6th, 2015

I was hip hopping between Flo Rida on Fallon, just because I like the iteration of the “F” and also because I do like Flo Rida and Saint Motel, who, despite playing Kimmel a while back, don’t get enough TV time and I like em, I actually interviewed em six years ago as well, so I went with Saint Motel.

Van Halen are an immaculate conception: the bastard child of Jimmy Page and Groucho Marx. And they were immaculate on stage, they did no more and no less than every single thing they had to do.” They are back on tour this summer but I ain’t going Jone’s Beach on a Tuesday night so this great expectation at Jimmy Kimmel will have to do.

Medium Cool: Talk Show Guests Week Of March 23rd, 2015

By Iman Lababedi | March 21, 2015

Julie Andrews on Kelly & Mike? That should be a love fest right? 5SoS, though q rerun so, in fact, no Brandon Flowers? The best thing you can say about his first solo album is it was better than last Killers albums, my friend Susan Whitall’s stomping ground, “Detroit Free Press editorial page editor Stephen Henderson” on Tavis Smiley. I am going with the Mavericks for Talk Show Guest of the week.

Medium Cool: Talk Show Guest For The Week Of March 16th, 2015

By Iman Lababedi | March 15, 2015

I am not as big a fan as many, her lyric power is undeniable and her songs are driven exercises in alt folk rock, but she has one of those voices where everything sounds exactly the same… like Snoop Dogg. And already way too many vocal tics. Still… there is a reason people love her so much

It is a heartbreaker breaker with Bobby and Whitney’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina a ridiculously young 21 years of age, clinging to life and passing fast and Brown praying for a miracle for his daughter, this was filmed a couple of weeks before Bobbi drowned and it just will be upsetting. Otherwise people’s tragedies, our entertainment. Queen Latifah should have killed it.

Medium Cool: Talk Show Guest Of The week 3-2-15

By Iman Lababedi | February 28, 2015

Usually I am looking up and down the list for half an hour before catching the name of a must see artist but next week Kate Pierson is sitting in with the Seth Myers show for four nights, in celebration of her new album, the absolutely terrific Guitar And Microphones and therefore goes straight to the head of the class. The picture is of rock nyc friend and B-52s fanatic Michael Malone and her royal Kateness.

Medium Cool: Talk Show Guest Of The week:

By Iman Lababedi | February 21, 2015

It is a toss up between Flo Rida on Kelly and Michael and Little Big Town on ellen, I like em both though I like Flo better, especially when he is just popping out which is the majority of the time. Though the one time I saw him live I was a little disappointed. I love Little Big Town as well, their last album was excellent. But no, Flo wins the week…

Medium Cool: Best Talk Show Guest February 16th, 2015

By Iman Lababedi | February 14, 2015

I am going with Chris Brown as the Talk Show guest of the week, with Taylor Swift (and John Oliver in the same show) a close second. I am not sure what Taylor has to sell, maybe her reputation as taylor and her gang of lawyers sue everything that moves every day of the week: she is like Disney suing Ma and Pa toy stores called Timberbell’s Home -as though the name belonged to Disney and not J.M. Barrie/ As for Chris Brown, who was 18 years old when he attacked Rihanna and Brown could join a monastery tomorrow and the headline would read: Woman beater finds God

Medium Cool: Guests Of The Week, February 9th, 2015

By Iman Lababedi | February 8, 2015

Back when “Livin’ La Vida Loca” firsrt dropped, I had a friend whose sister was a Broadway chorus gal and she had been in Les Miz on broadway and she told me Ricky was gay and I told another friend and the other friend cried tears of happiness because he was gay. When Ricky came out it was a real big deal for the gay community and if that isn’t enough, his new song “Adios” is real good. Good enough to make him the Guest of The Week.

Some have died for less.

D’Angelo, Saturday Night Live, Saturday, January 31st, 2015

By Iman Lababedi | February 1, 2015

Written eight years ago, Black Messiah would’ve been everything people say it is if the rest of the album was as great as “Really Love” and with D’Angelo’s gorgeous falsetto and a Spanish groove r&b love song of the first order at his disposal, the r&b man got all of it. A superb first vision of the post-Black Messiah star, apparently the Sly Stone comparisons are gonna have to wait some

Grammys 2015: Pardners In Duets AGAIN

By Iman Lababedi | January 29, 2015

First the Grammys were cool, then they missed the bus on rock and roll and missed it again with the British invasion, and then, sometime in the 1990s, about the time Dylan received the lifetime achievement award, they got cool, up till the moment they realized duets would give them cachet and now…

I’ve seen Fall Out Boy a number of times live and listened to everything because that’s what I do not because I like them… till now. “Uma Thurman”, with its hysterical “The Munsters” quote (Thurman slash Herman Munster is my bet) and it is one of the most fun songs of the year, that’s all. In honor of their achievement, rock nyc awards them with Best Guest Of The Week.

Why the peanut farmer former POTUS you ask? Because he is giving Bob Dylan this year’s Musicares Award and while I had my doubt as to Jimmy as far as presidents go, I sure don’t hate him. It is hard being the president, really it is. JFK was a great President, Clinton was a great President, but Carter? Well, at least he’s a Dylan fan.

Yusef is playing Fallon the day before I am seeing him in Philadelphia, Dave Grohl is everywhere but no shocker there, Mary J is on both Wendy Williams and Jimmy Fallon but I’m going with Kristin Chenoweth because I’ve loved her ever since her break out role as Sally Brown and she has a new album out. All legitimate reasons.

U2 are gonna spend the week on Jimmy Fallon, pushing the product no doubt. An album Songs Of Innocence, that is probably the best of the century and still not that great. In Rolling Stone, U2 make the case that they work and rework songs (deep into the ground) because they care so much. Unfortunately, any spontaneity whatsoever is completely destroyed by the years and years of work. Still, five days on Fallon, some of it should be worth the while.

Or how about Minnie Driver who has a not terrible new album just released> Melissa Etheridge? Jessie J? Neon Trees? I’m gonna go with Rusell Brand because the guy is a spitfire who says whatever he likes always.

Nothing too exciting here. Ryan Adams on Conan and Ellen, so I guess it might be interesting if they actually interview him and we can hear him, you know, be more than a crabby bastard or a Borscht Belt comedian. And then, just to make things really fun, Bryan Adams on Kelly and Michael. Hey maybe they can both sing “Summer Of 69”

I skipped the first show when it played MSG and I kinda regret it. On Letterman on Thursday I can take a a look at # 2.

Smokey Robinson on the Talk. A crap show but daddy, it’s Smokey. But I’m just messing with you, Barbra Streisand on Fallon, her first Late Night Appearance in FIFTY YEARS (except for a cameo on Letterman in 94) in support of the dreaded Partners, towers over the week.

I am not sure if he is singing, but if he is singing Mandy Patinkin is an absolute riot in full blown cabaret mode and must be seen at least once. Letterman has the New Pornographers, Fallon has Maroon 5, Anything else: oh yeah, the name of the column, people have been stopping me in the streets to inquire. James Wolcott had a Village Voice column called Media Cool, playing on the name of the 1960s fictional-documentary “Medium Cool” which I went back to here.

The keeper here is Michael Cera on Letterman. Cera -the Superbad actor who made unassuming a lifestyle choice, has a pretty good album just released, True That, which you can stream (or boy) here and may I recommend the Blaze Foley cover “Clay Pigeons”.
