Yesterday, Jamie Spears agreed to step down from his daughter’s conservatorship, and the world still can’t believe that Britney Spears is finally free after 13 years of having very little control over her own life.
We were repeatedly told that it was very hard or even impossible to terminate a conservatorship, but the persistence of the #FreeBritney movement proved these people wrong. Their ongoing battle paid off, and after years and years of hard work, and protests on Brttney’s behalf, Thursday was their biggest victory to date.
If you are like me and have only recently heard about the Free Britney hashtag, it doesn’t mean the Britney army wasn’t there since the beginning: the site FreeBritney.net was launched in 2009, and it has scrutinously followed the events since the beginning.
Since the singer’s infamous breakdown in 2008, she had been under a conservatorship helmed by her father, Jamie Spears. Despite working non-stop, touring the world, releasing multiple albums, working on a variety of television shows, starring in a lucrative Las Vegas residency, and launching several business ventures, she was declared incapable to oversee decisions about her estate and health, and at 38 she was still not able to enjoy the simplest things or take the most important decisions in her life: such as driving a car by herself, or asking for the removal of the IUD placed in her uterus!
Britney’s fans never gave up, and this summer was the battle for her freedom and her life. I went to the courthouse last June when Britney gave a poignant testimony via Zoom, explaining the details of her conservatorship and urging the judge to remove her father from his position. She even used the term ‘abuse’ and said her family should be ‘in jail.’ Things changed when she was finally able to hire her own attorney, something she was not able to do so far, and on August 12, Jamie Spears stepped down and said he would cooperate with the court on a transition. This is truly a victory for the #FreeBritney movement since Spears declared there were ‘no actual grounds for suspending or removing’ him, he even called the petition to terminate the conservatorship ‘unjustified,’ but his decision was due to the ‘public battle with his daughter.’
Britney’s new attorney, Mathew Rosengart said he intends to investigate Jamie Spears’ conduct over the past 13 years and plans to depose him under oath.
Since the news broke, several celebrities have expressed their satisfaction. Cher, a big Britney supporter, tweeted ‘If I was Brit I’d get a forensic accountant, I couldn’t [be] happier 4 her if I was twins.’ Paris Hilton also expressed her full approval: I’m so happy to hear this news. It’s been so long overdue but I’m so glad that Britney is on her way to finally being free. Sending so much love! #FreeBritney.’ Even the Black Eyed Peas have a new music video for their song ‘HIT IT‘ which features a scene where dancers hold up #FreeBritney signs
I am sure there are still many steps for Britney to do before she can regain full control of her life, let’s see what this transition period will be, but there is still something that doesn’t make sense to me. Britney Spears has worked nonstop since she was a teenager, she has been an extremely successful pop star for almost 3 decades, and her estate is estimated at $60M? only $60M? Shouldn’t she be much richer than this at 38? Ariana Grande’s (28) net worth is estimated at $180M, Pink’s (41) net worth is estimated at $200M and Justin Timberlake’s (40) net worth is estimated at $250M… where did Britney’s money go? Isn’t it another thing her attorney should investigate?
Today, besides her usual Instagram dance series, Britney posted a video of a baby elephant running after wild birds. Right away her fans interpreted that as a sign of strength, power, and loyalty. I don’t know if there is a hidden message behind every one of Britney’s posts, but the caption under one of her dance videos was ‘You can see the last dance in red top I’m very hesitant when dancing, but letting go is freedom!!’
