Brief Encounters: New Albums 8-19-22 – 8-25-22 Reviewed

Close To Home – Aitch – with his debut album Aitch isn’t as catchy as he needs to be even while a fine young rapper with pockets large enough to nail a sample from Ashanti and Stone Roses and an assist from the should hit the charts even here, Ed Sheeran featured “My G” – B-

We Made Plans & God Laughed – Beauty School Dropout – they have some interesting names behind em – Mark Hoppus, Pete Wentz- and position themselves as an alternative future of hair metal on Hollywood Boulevard… the songs aren’t there… – C+

Heartmind – Cass McCombs – On his tenth album, Cass remains the last man standing mining the under appreciated post-Big Star bands like the dBs on a set of straightforward power-pop with a side of post-punk and a wink – B

HOLY FVCK – Demi Lovato – she has been getting her pop punk on this year and her new album, Holy Fvck is perfectly modulated female confessional with melody and rock though could use a coupla more potential hits – B

& – Eric Church – lowkey EP between his last two albums – B+

The Show: Live from the UK – Gretchen Peters – the country singer songwriter with a live album even as she stops touring, pretty but distracting country – C+

Freakout/Release – Hot Chip – the EDM pop band are the same boring beat sampling band they have always been – C+

We All We Get – Internet Money – the r&b (or do I mean hip hop?) collective offer up six tracks of bedevilled electronica and featured rappers including Lil Tecca and Lil Yachty – B

Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones – Madonna – 50 remixes of 50 hits – ALBUM OF THE WEEK – A

Viva Las Vengeance – Panic! At The Disco – a frothy and enjoyable but hit and miss affair from Brendan and it is in search of that one song and it doesn’t have it – C+

Profound Mysteries – Röyksopp – the Norwegian duo first came to the world’s attention due to their work with Robyn, but they are not dance oriented, they are ambient dreamweavers and delicate as well as awful tedious – C+

FM – Ryan Adams – a masterful classic rock album genuflecting in the general direction of Tom Petty – A-

Platinum Collection – Steps – The UK dance pop band are about as brutal as any dance pop band hoisted on us, like Abba without the songs or Spice Girls without the charm – C

Life After Death – TobyMac – Christian Contemporary star with a different take on God though it all works out in the end… – D+

Vol. II – Watkins Family Hour – With Jackson Browne joining the siblings Watkins on “The Late Show” and Fiona Apple helping em cover Dean Martin, this is something like L.A. royalty getting their Americana on – B

How Do I Get That Star – Zannie – a lovely, twang Americana leaning, a concept album about an alien in the USA, it is mellow without being boring and at its best a wonderful change of pace – B
