Brief Encounters: New Albums 12-23-22 – 12-29-22 Reviewed

Wednesday Before Last – Chris Webby – the Connecticut white rapper with a touch of boom bap but within his own world, a minor drug dealer who have away mixtapes with each purchase – B-

No Thank You – Lil Simz – I am not sure if the UK has had an equivalent explosion of black women performing r&b and soul in posse’s like Sault, ever before. Inflo is all over it and while i could be more upbeat, Lil Simz should become even bigger with this fine collection of Sault collective rap – B

Indigo – RM – For the uninitiated, and for Western sensibilities, the problem with K-Pop is that the seams show and it is manufactured by big corporations hiring teenage boys and girls and turning them into product. RM is a member of BTS and solo he sounds like a dance and r&b K-Pop giant… if you like that kinda thing – B-

SZNZ: Winter – Weezer – of the four seasons and despite it having his worst song ever, this is Weezer’s best. “Iambic Pentameter” is the best song he’s written since the early 00s, since Maladroit – C+

Lost Files – YoungBoy Never Broke Again – hmmmm, I guess there is a backstory I amn unaware of for the popular r&b guy with a typically strong set – B

All My Homies Hate Ticketmaster (Live from Red Rocks) – Zach Bryan – It isn’t just that Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen are better, so is HARDY. On a freezing cold evening at Red Rock Zach was very well liked, and while fighting Ticketmaster is just about impossible it is the thought that counts. Meanwhile, appearances not withstanding, this ain’t that good – C+
