Knicks In The Second Round Of The Playoffs: Losing 1 – 3 to the Heat and with the season on the line took a game in the Eastern Conference yesterday. All hail big man center Mitchell Robinson, the Heat tried to stop him by getting him to the free throw line last night at MSG. He made three of four down the line sealing a 112 – 103 win and a game six.
On Broadway: I am planning a third visit to Sweeney Todd and I certainly expect it to clean up at the Tonys, at a minimum all the best musical revivals. But will it rest after the leads leave? The problem is that “Sweeney” will appeal to the tourist trade about as much as the Metropolitan Opera. Although, at least as a Sondheim work, “Merrily We Roll long” will do better even though it isn’t as good.
What Is Real?: “Bupkis”, the Peacock streaming sitcom starring Pete Davidson as a Pete variation and the always great Joe Pesci as his grandfather, the show is completely insane and who knows how real it all is? Think of Baby J’s line recently, and this is just what he is sharing with us.
Biden Vs Trump: Two old men crippled by age and corruption fighting for the soul of the USA, a liberal nightmare Vs a totalitarian racist.
The New Conservatism: when I was a teenager in the 1970s it was a time for anything goes, a loosening of outdated morality being put to the fire. In the 2020s everything has been dialed back, the stench of the repulsive, gun loving, women, blacks, minorities, queer, etc, etc hating middle America. Has there ever been a longer list of people you can’t fuck? Let’s simplify it: if the person is over 18 and it is two (or more) consenting adults, feel free to fuck ’em. It’s as though the greatest gift to the species, fucking for pleasure, has been eroded.
Trans Rights: I have no answer for trans women in sports and that is my largest, nearly only, problem with transgender rights. It is a real headache for the L.G.B.T.Q.I.A.+ community because it is inherently unfair to women. If you have three trans athletes in a sport they will take all three top spots. Now, if L.G.B.T.Q.I.A.+ community don’t support trans athletes they make their entire position on trans people tenuous, but if they do even people who support trans rights might stop supporting them. As conservatives try to destroy hard fought for rights, the unfairness may have to be accepted.
New York Baseball: yes, the Yanks rolled the A’s but neither the Yanks nor the Mets have very good teams AGAIN. It is time for Steinbrenner and Cohen to start a huge rebuilding. This can’t go on forever. But neither team has a Gene Michaels so… another year with a one and out playoffs.
Ashleigh Burton: I am debating writing a full review of Ashleigh, she reviews classic movies (by her definition, not mine) that she is watching for the first time on her youtube channel and she is a charming MC with real opinions and an infectious smile, she gets it right more often than not and she should really, really not burp in the middle of her review every single time. But Ashleigh is smart and sometimes I am baffled by her estimation of Mel Brooks (she preferred “Men In Tights” to “Young Frankenstein”) but she loves him and has the hots for Gene Wilder (she loves men, which is adorable) and has a fat cat named Beans and a husband… Somebody should give her a talk show…
After Creem: while editing Steve Crawford’s deep dive into America’s Only, I put my album by album reviews of Aretha, Sinatra and James Brown on hold… I expect Steve to be back with a fresh set of downs before summer is over, till then I think I will go back to the reviews.
Me: I may be out of rocknyc before June. If so I will go directly back to a contemplated “The Winter Of ’39”, and may start a website to store my fiction (I may not).
