Best Shows To See In Los Angeles This Upcoming Week

Dwight Yoakam at the Annenberg center for photography in 2015

There’s always something going on in Los Angeles, way too many music events I can attend each week, but here is what’s happening this upcoming week:

– On Sunday March 26th, Gary Clark Jr. is at the Fonda theater… if you are into him. He was supposed to play with Eric Clapton at the Forum, but Clapton got severe bronchitis, and the shows have been postponed in September, and meanwhile you can catch Gary solo at the Fonda. I saw him at Amoeba once, and he is certainly a pro.

– Monday March 27th is the last Monday Night Residency of Tashaki Miyaki at the Echo and although I have already seen all the bands playing that night several times, the lineup is really great, with the 70s aggressive psychedelia of Jesus Sons, the fuzz-headbanging of L.A. Witch, and JJAMZ’s Z Berg for a solo performance.

– On Tuesday March 28th, Sleigh Bells at the El Rey Tuesday. I saw them years ago at the same place, but I am not sure they still give that same helluva blowing-up-the-roof show.

– Also on Tuesday, our friends of Saint Motel open for Panic! At The Disco at the Forum.

– On Thursday, March 30th, the Orwells are at The Regent Theater, and they also played at the Observatory in Orange County on Friday. I remember seeing them during the early days of the FYF fest, they were wild and young, pop-punk and fun and they are going to tour with Weezer this fall.

– Also on Thursday, honky-tonk king Dwight Yoakam will rock the Palladium with special guest X, and the GRAMMY Museum will present an intimate screening of Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis (Our Friends), followed by a conversation with Colin Hanks and Sean Stuart moderated by Scott Goldman, Vice President of the GRAMMY Foundation. Not sure if Jesse Hughes will show up too.

– From Thursday, March 30th to Saturday April 1st, the Echo/Echoplex once again go into mini festival mode, with Drill, a unique festival to mark ’40 years of not looking back’ featuring Wire, Bob Mould, Mikal Cronin + string & horn ensemble, JULIA HOLTER, Mild High Club, Wand, Laetitia Sadier, Fitted, Part Time Punks, Howardamb, Once and Future Band, Chasms, Noveller, Slows, The Pinkflag Guitar Orchestra. WIRE are releasing their 15th studio album ‘Silver /Lead’ on the 31st March 2017, and, on the eve of their 40th anniversary, LA gets the scoop with this Drill festival and 3 days of music. Once again this will be a lot to absorb, but tickets for a single day are available too.

– On Friday March 31, Tuareg band Tinariwen is at the Fonda theater for an exotic night, venturing deep in the desert, with their groovy ‘asuf’, which is the equivalent of American blues.

– Also on Friday March 31st, the always tempestuous and raucous Halo Circus fronted by the very talented Allison Iraheta will be headlining this year’s GIRLS ROCK LA at the 333 in downtown Los Angeles,

– On Saturday April 1st, Lincoln Durham will bring his gothic stomping blues at the Resident, and massive head-bangers Meatbodies will open for Delicate Steve at the Teragram Ballroom.

Did I only scratch the surface? Probably, but, on Sunday March 26th, I am also going to a benefit for the Smell at the Teragram Ballroom, headlined by Thee Oh Sees.
