Beck Has Dropped Out Of His Tour With Arcade Fire

It’s official, Beck is the second act to drop out of Arcade Fire’s tour in North America and people are furious. This is understandable, Beck is not your average opener, he has a large following and some fans are even saying that Arcade Fire should have been the opener for Beck. He was a big part of the ticket, and he was even the reason why some people bought a ticket for this tour in the first place. Now that he is out, there is a lot of disappointment and frustration. It’s also a bummer because it was the 20th anniversary of “Sea Change,” one of his greatest albums.

Unless Arcade Fire is canceling the tour, there will be no refunds, and reselling tickets will be difficult since there are still plenty of them available on all sites I have checked. At least, this is the case for both LA shows. I just wonder why Beck waited so long before announcing he was not part of the tour anymore. Feist dropped 6 weeks ago, so what took him so long?

If you were living under a rock these past months, this catastrophic (for Arcade Fire) cascade of cancelations is happening because of a Pitchfork article published in August, which revealed multiple accusations of sexual misconduct against frontman Win Butler.

Interestingly, Beck hasn’t made any comment after the announcement and the news leaked because of emails sent by Seatgeak… not even Ticketmaster! When she made the decision, Feist posted a long statement on her social media, but Beck even declined to comment. This could be one leftover of his Scientology upbringing, these people are not really talkative… by the way, I never canceled Beck because he was (still is?) a Scientologist even though I consider this cult totally unethical and honestly awful.

Seatgeak announced that Beck has been replaced by Haitian artist Boukman Eksperyans, an artist whom nobody knows. No offense to this courageous band, but these are very big shoes to fill and no matter how good they will be, people will feel robbed. However, what else could have they done? At this point, there is probably no famous musician who wants to be the opener for Arcade Fire.

But you have to wonder: did Beck cancel the tour based on some moral high ground or fear of possible backlash? I bet Beck succumbed to the pressure and didn’t want to be canceled by association, which is sort of stupid. Didn’t he open for Red Hot Chili Peppers a few months ago? When it comes to sexual assault, Anthony Kiedis has a far worst history than Butler. Did anyone forget about this? Or about his predatory early days and sexual relationships with minors? It’s true that he admitted everything in his book “Scar Tissue,” in 2004, but it’s crazy how inconsistent cancel culture can be.

It’s difficult to decide if Arcade Fire is really canceled. I have read several positive reviews of their live shows in Europe (like this one, or this one, or this one…) and if the allegations will probably weigh heavily on the atmosphere of the shows, the public will show up. Anyway, the story should only stay between Butler, his wife, and the other women, and I still cannot believe the naive expectations that the public has regarding rock stars. But these probably are the new Sexx Laws.
