Be Here Now: rock nyc’s Top Concert Picks For The Week Of February 5th, 2018

Univision’s X 96.3 have provided us with a terrific line for LA X Love Live of reggaeton slash Latin pop, two of whom are huge crossover stars who spent  a huge amount of time on the Billboard 200 in 2017, at Radio City Music Hall on Friday. J. Balvin’s breakthrough single featured Beyonce, a Luis Fonsi remix with Justin Bieber was the biggest single of that year. Luis’ “Despacito” should have been the song of the year in 2017, but the Grammys must have thought he didn’t step it up enough or be borderline racists. Still, while Latin Americans (and the rest of us), are reeling over Trump’s immigration policies, Latin pop stars (and theatre of course) are having a moment. Help them celebrate.

Tuesday – WNYC Studios Presents Alec Baldwin’s Here’s the Thing w/ Michael Wolff – The Town Hall – On some level it doesn’t really matter how true “Fire And Fury” is, it is all too plausible and that’s enough. Shout out for Baldwin’s Trump impression.

Tuesday – KAT EDMONSON WINTER RESIDENCY AT CITY VINEYARD – I never forgave her for passing on “Who’s Counting,” though you might forgive her because of “Till We Start To Kiss”.

Wednesday – New York Blues Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Concert –  BB Kings -“‘The New York Blues Hall of Fame honors legendary, master and great local blues artists from the great state of New York. We have formally inducted artists such as John Hammond, Levon Helm, Johnny Winter to name a few but we also like to keep the focus on the local, in the trenches blues musicians who play their hearts out night after night and give them the recognition they truly deserve.’ – Michael Packer, NY Ambassador ”

Wednesday – MARY GAUTHIER – RIFLES AND ROSARY BEADS TOUR AT CITY VINEYARD – Rifles And Rosary Beads, songs by and for soldiers back home again, is so good I would go to this if it was at Winery instead of Vineyards.

Wednesday – Stew And The Negro Problem – Lincoln Center – A career retrospective from the multi-talented, Broadway bound, soul rocker.

Wednesday – J. Roddy Walston and The Business – The only time I saw these rockers live, opening for the Hold Steady at Bowery Ballroom, they blew me away.

Thursday –  Rakim, Funkmaster Flex – BB Kings – Z-100’s legendary DJ and the poet laureate of rap on one bill.

Thursday – Black Veil Brides & Asking Alexandria, Crown The Empire – Terminal 5 – I am not a huge fan, but BVB have always been good to us.

Friday –  Anthony Hamilton, Keyshia Cole, Avant, Tamia, Eric Benet, Donell Jones – Prudential Center – I, personally, believe that if Eric hadn’t done the dirty on Halle Berry he’d be a huge star today.

Friday – Tiny Moving Parts – MHOW – I didn’t give these screamo punk rockers the love they deserved for the new album Swell last month, but it stands up well.

Saturday –  Joan Osborne’s Dylanology Feat. Special Guests Jackie Greene, Amy Helm – Highline Ballroom – Joan may have been a one hit wonder, but her hit was covered by Prince. Can you say that? And she is a career blues artist and the album she’s pushing is uniformly excellent.
