Be Here Now: New Albums Reviewed 11-25-16 – 12-1-16

Colossal Squid – Adam Betts – Adam is the drummer for Three Trapped Tigers, Heritage Orchestra, Emperor Yes and teacher at Tech Music Schools and BIMM Institute London, and if you don’t believe me, give this album of percussion heaven if you love drums – C+

Hypnosophy – Aenaon – Prog metal with symphonic aspirations from Greece – C+

Get Up on the Get Down EP – Avenue Eight – Funky dancy band from Philly, it is exciting disco with lotsa bass and thile they don’t quite maintain it even over an EP, the title track and “Carried Away” are aces – B

Only Heaven – Coldcut – Roots Manuva -a 90s Tricky, raps over moody dark pop tracks by DJs Jonathan More and Matt Black, dark and attractive though a little boring – C+

Gunslinger – Garth Brooks – First rate country rock, old fashioned in the best way and despite compaints of a lack of risk, personally I am as sick of risk as I’ve ever been of anything and appreciate these ten, straight up no chase Brooksian country slices of white bread country roll. Sure, your need for a song called “Baby Let’s Lay Down And Dance” might not be mine, but either way, this is the one to hear if it is.Hell, even the ballads are pretty good. Considered a little treading water, I really can’t find a fault with it. At $5 from Amazon, an absolute steal – ALBUM OF THE WEEK B+

Boots No. 1: The Official Revival Bootleg – Gillian Welch – Americana’s poster girl, dogs out alternate versions, outtakes that didn’t make it, and demos of her 1996 breakthrough, Revival. If you love her you’ll love it, if you don’t… well, she is really pretty good though a little quiet for my tastes – B

You Can’t Kill Us – Icon For Hire – Paramore soundalikes (not to mention lookalikes), and surely there is room for another. But they don’t hit the sweet spot very often – C+

Broken Knowz – Jay Daniel – Mood tech DJ – C

List – Martyrdöd – Death metal via Swede, why do all these metalcore guys look as though they’ve just been arrested for DUI? – C+

emergence – Max Cooper – More ambience music – C+

Minor Victories – Minor Victories – This is one of those instrumental bands like Mogwai (in fact a member of Mogwai is here), only with vocals – B-

The Great Unknown – Natalie McCool – Indie popster’s sophomore album is catchy and different, soulful singer songwriter sharing a way with words and a melodic gift – B

4Ever – Prince – 40 WB tracks from the obvious to the obvious, with a coupla wild cards two thirds of the way through aka the oblivious. If you want only one Prince album… but why would you want only one Prince album? – A

Education – Ruined Families – 10 songs in 17 minutes of punkcore – B

Sex Swing – Sex Swing – All metal machine music all the time, even the one named “Grace Jones”. If Lou Reed had released it, its odd mix of grinding brakes and chants might have gone pop  – B-

In His Infernal Majesty’s Service – Witchery – Swedish metalcore first album in six years nearly lives up to its title – B-

Blank Tape – Worriedaboutsatan – Heavy duty ambient swirl and whirls of sound – C

Red Friday EP – YG – Hot on the heels of Still Brazzy, this is a fast hard hit in the plexus, one joint after another, and song for song it is as good as the Cali man gets… plus, after “FDT” he can do no wrong right now – B+
