Be Here Now: New Album Reviews 1-8-16 – 1-14-16

ALBUM OF THE WEEK 1-8-16 – 1-14-16

Audiodamn! EP – Audiodamn! – German disco, without any krautness to it -ergo modern New Wave with a lead singer who took lessons from maroon 5 – B-

In Ruin – Cauldron – New old school heavy metal, middling to meh – C+

All I Know EP – Conrad Sewell – Soulful 27 year old Aussie is ready for his close-up with Elvis Duran – C-

Blackstar – David Bowie – …goes jazz, one second tier classic, a coupla pretty goods and a few more also rans – ALBUM OF THE WEEK – B+

Place Called Victory EP – Deon Kipping – Typical Gospel 2016, man does he let the choir carry him into the Lord’s arms – C

Waking Up The Giants – Grizfolk – Indie band out of LA want to share big feelings but can’t pull it off. Any band with a song called “Bob Marley” better get their U2 on better than this – D+

Leave Me Alone – Hinds – Madrid chick band add pop punk to occasional Latin flow and uncomfortable lyrics to general badassness, just waiting on Taylor Swift endorsement to break Stateside – B+

A War Against You – Ignite – Cali hardcore with emo reach and prog inclinations – C-

Paramount – It Lies Within – Hardcore metal from industrial slums Flint, Michigan is a no nonsense ear bleeding treat. Start with “Lights The Way” just to remind yourself there are melodies as well – B+

New Year’s Concert 2016 – Mariss Jansons, Weiner Philharmonika –  In Vienna, music director of the Oslo (and Pittsburgh) Philharmonic performs a masterclass in Strauss to start the new Year – B

Mark Bishop And Forget The Sea – Mark Bishop And Forget The Sea – Christian Country meets singer songwriter – D+

Joytime – Marshmello – Skrillex pal Dotcom working under a different, electronic dance blips up the ying yang – C+

Preludes (Original Cast Recordings) – Preludes Original Cast – I didn’t even like the “Hamilton” Original Cast Recording because I had no sense of context, and even with those limitations, this ” musical fantasia set in the hypnotized mind of Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff” is atrocious. Who had the bright idea for this one? Dave Malloy and Rachel Chavkin… come the revolution, brothers – D

Ron Pope And The Nighthawks – Ron Pope And The Nighthawks – Like the Black Crowes only poppier and not as good – C

Big World – Stevie McCrorie – Not big enough – D

War At Heart – The Order Of Elijah – Metcalcore by the numbers – C-

Between The Glitz And Grime, Vol 2, Culprit’s Best – Various Artists – Electronic dance label out of LA, put a smooth veneer over DJs playing with moodatronics – B-

Pop Remixed, Vol 2 – Various Artist – Worldwide DJs remix pop also rans from 2015 – B

Straight Outta Compton (Music From The Motion Picture) – Various Artists – As opposed to “inspired by” of course. West Coast rap plus George Clinton crews, plus Steve Arrington and Roy Ayers – B

The Lion Guard – Various Artists – Minor songs from the Disney TV toon based on “The Lion King”, much much better on the faster tracks – C+

Where have You Been All My Life – Villagers – Recorded live in the studio, minimal overdubs, mostly one takes, and proof that none of that helps. This is terrible singer songwriter and  “Courage” is possibly the worst song of the year – D
