Be Here Early: New Music Releases 1-20-17 – 1-26-16

AFI (The Blood Album) – AFI – Blood? Anemic rockers and one of the worst rock bands in the world today, a brutal listen. Who likes this stuff? Anyone? Anyone? They’ve been doing it since 91 so someone has to claim responsibility – D

Selfish Age – As Lions – Starring Iron Maiden’s lead singer’s son, this is one of those albums where if you love it you never heard of Elvis. Absolutely abysmal metal -it should be against the law – D-

Pas pire pop, I Love You So Much – Avec le Soleil Sortant de sa Bouche – Goes on a bit and less experimental than expected, I thought it was instrumental but eventually there is some chanting in the background, still it is an exciting ride with some thrilling moments from these Montreal weirdos. Pas pire at all  – B

Apocalipstick – Cherry Glazerr – For an album to be as good as this title, Apocalipstick, it better be pretty good and for a song to be as good as this title “Told You I’d Be With The Boys”, it is gonna have to rock as hard as the Stones (if Mick Jagger was a girl), and it is both. Meet Clementine Creevy -a superb songwriter with a garage pop band who’ve given us (quick let me to the math), the third big album of 2017 – B+

Hang – Foxygen – Sure, anything to do with Anton Newcombe is gonna suck to a degree, and this pop rock experimental symphonic, wildly ambitious mess sucks… to a degree. But the first two songs are ridiculously powerful and overreaching and if everything else grates and grates fast, consider it a well aimed bad album or a poorly constructed good album in waiting – B-

The Grateful Dead (50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) – Grateful Dead – Includes a live recording from 1966… I’ll alert the media – C

Music To Draw To: Satellite – Kid Koala – Ambient DJ electronica, pretty but indifferent till Iceland’s Emiliana Torrini adds her beautiful voices and then suddenly it blooms. Try “Fallaway” – C+

The Search For Everything – Wave One EP – John Mayer – Releasing his latest album in waves of EP is a pretty darn good idea, gives us many more chances to sneer at this guitar missing soft rock MOR about the pains of growing older drag. Best song? “Moving On And Getting Over” -a soulful sweet nothing with a touch of Mayfield in the mix. But that’s your lot and as he whistles his way out of the last track you’ll be singing don’t let the door hit you – C

Intoxicated Women – Mick Harvey – In which Bad Seed Mick continues translating bad ass Serge Gainsbourg into English, except for Je T’aime… Moi Non Plus” which he translates into German – B

Fenix – Nicky Jam – The sound of reggaeton 2017, including his song with Enrique Iglesias “El Perdon” which spent a mind boggling 30 weeks at the top of the Hot Latin songs charts. Cresting on the second, Jam hooks up with Latin stars from all over Latin America (and Kid Ink), including a name you read here often enough Wisin. It is a little ordinary but as pop goes, this will pop big time – B-

Hegelian Dialectic (The Book of Revelation) – Prodigy – Half of Mobb Depp and the man can rhyme, and has an opinion, but is boring beyond belief unless you’re in the market for how bad atomic bombs are – C

The Band Who Must Not Be Named – The Slants – Alyson wrote about these troublemakers (here), who went to the Supreme Court to protect their name. I see nothing wrong in Asians calling themselves slants (the word you’re not reading is eyes), but it would help if they didn’t produce such disinteresting indie rock with a dance beat – C
