Be Here Early: New Album Reviews 7-7-17 -7-13-17

ISSA – 21 Savage – Woah, as brutal a rapper as you’ll ever hear, the street level Savage is blood and guts in the streets stuff with a relentless horror, there is a disconnected coldness to the man – B-

Take Me Home And Make Me Like – Alex Chilton –  unrehearsed, first-take recordings by Alex Chilton, recorded in 1975, it says here… pretty excellent and very exciting rock and roll full on fun and games, filled with Beatle and Eddie Cochran and alternative takes of songs that would appear a coupla years later. .. – A

MARK – Bobby Raps – White mix and match rock and rap by white boys is almost the definition of ugh, but this Twin Cities legend’s major label debut is the best in class by far, he has a terrific voice and a blue toned world view that announces itself and maintains itself throughout. So ugh, yeah, but not UGH – B

Hug Of Thunder – Broken Social Scene – They sound good, fifteen members strong and their first album in seven years, the Canadian should sound good… they should sound better, and the songs aren’t these big bright creations they should be. Hippie posers is the way we used to dub this sound – C+

Looking Forward: The Roots Of Big Star – Chris Bell – The tragic Big Star guitarist and leader’s pre-Big Star, great at pop, less great at psychedelia, and overall a master ripe for reassessment through his band Rock City, Ice Water, and the Wallabys, this is a must hear as a missing link between the Beatles and Big Star – A

Something To Tell You – Haim – This isn’t close to a perfect update of 70s SoCal pop rock, but it isn’t bad either. They have a ton of good songs, no dogs, but, and here we get there, not a single great one either. You can’t be Christine McVie if you can’t write “Over My Head” and they circle it and circle it, listen to “Nothing’s Wrong,” without nailing it – ALBUM OF THE WEEK – B+

Something’s Changing – Lucy Rose – English folk without the folke stuff and the pity is Lucy’s voice is pretty enough and strong enough to pull off something less innocuous – C+

Every Valley – Public Service Broadcasting – A mix of DJ Shadow and Cabaret Voltaire with an art rock background about the death of Wales Mining Industry, it is a pretty good trip into the past with moments of extreme beauty, though prog rock by any other means is still prog rock – B-

Girl Disrupted – Sevyn Streeter – R&B woman as journeyman of iffy r&b is old school all the way, especially on the fine “Ol School” featuring Jeremih  and the always estimable Dej Loaf. Elsewhere it doesn’t happen often enough and doesn’t make it through to the end – B-

Shakey Graves And The Horse He Rode In On (Nobody’s Fool and The Donor Blues EP) – Shakey Graves –  Mix and match of a 2012 and 2015 recording for no discernible reason by the Americana star – C+

A Walk With Love And Death – The Melvins, the Death album sounds like Black Sabbath, the Love album sounds like the Doors go disco – B-

Moonshine Freeze – This Is The Kit – Alternative folk from the UK, better rowdier, but good quiet, and filled with intelligence and glory…  they could do with more attack but even so, I see what John Parrish saw in Kate Sables – B

Boo Boo – Toro Y Moi – The Crown Prince of Chillwave reminds me why the cool ambient sounds never got to me: they’re boring – C+
