Saturday Night at Annenberg Space for Photography was a dance party, an international dance party, ‘International’ is actually the last song Baaba Maal and Brazilian Girls sang together. The night opened with LA duo Classics, making the crowd dance and bounce with their DJ eclectic styles, and the party continued with New York City Brazilian Girls and the fashionable swagger of their singer Sabina Sciubba, preaching love for everyone, and starting a mini riot when she invited people from the crowd to dance on stage. Baaba Maal and his large band continued the dance with his West African traditional rhythms turning full rock on some numbers. Despite the language barrier (at least for me, because there was a guy next to me who knew all the lyrics) there was a strong socio-politico consciousness, as all night long Baaba and Sabina mentioned the powerful REFUGEE photo exhibit featured at Annenberg, documenting the lives of refugees from all over the world from Bangladesh to Slovenia. It was international music, dance and joy.
