An Omicron Christmas

In 2020, #BLM met the Coronavirus and for one brief moment politics invaded pop. The entire Run The Jewels album, Fiona Apple in isolation, Noname and Lil Baby’s, and H.E.R. protest music. No live concerts but plenty of songs that reflected where we were. In 2021, Covid-19 Delta was in our review mirror, and I’d be going to concerts since May. As late as December 10th’s IHEARTRADIO Jingle Ball Covid was barely mentioned, Joe Jackson extorted us to dance harder because we couldn’t together for so long and pre-show an MC warned us we can’t appear on the CW show without a mask on. That had changed by Billy Joel at the same venue ten days later where the First Noel was usurped by a very real fear of contagion, it’s scary out there, Joel noted.

2021 started with the storming of the capital and democracy dragging its knuckles across the floor… but nobody wrote a song about it… And how about the attempt to steal the election? Nobody sang about that either. I guess Black Lives didn’t matter as much, and, with the exception of Sun June’s early in 21’s Somewhere, the conversation disappeared.

Right now, as New York City is like a relapsed alcoholic with the tremors, FOX cancels the New Year’s Eve spectacular, nightclubs close in droves, the Rockettes ended their season way early and theatre was Russian roulette with people in their seats when a performance can be cancelled. , And have run out of Covid Music. Meanwhile, my Christmas plans are a nightmare of cancels and doubts…. So the best I can say is if you believe in God pray we don’t get the transmissibility of Omicron with the deadliness of Ebola, a distinct possibility as we short changed the third world who transmitted it to the West and the anti-vaxxers are allowing it to mutate on them, even as breakthrough cases need a new name. Remember, the Black Death didn’t decimate Europe, it tripartited Europe with 33% of the population lost. In the US that would mean 100 Million dead… Not sure what we can sing about that, “Ring Around The Rosie” no longer cuts it.
