Adopt The Arts At The Record Parlour, Thursday January 28th 2016

Robyn Kirmess, Brooklyn Allman and Gia Ciambotti

If you don’t know about Adopt the Arts you should, it’s a cool organization which raises money to keep arts education in public schools in Los Angeles. Everyone is aware that schools always struggle to keep music and arts education in their curriculum, but because of recent budget cuts, it has become impossible…. That’s why the Adopt the Arts Foundation exists and several times per year, they bring together well-known artists, celebrities, public figures, policy makers to raise money and save the arts in America’s public schools. Arts in general are always the first victim although we know how important they are at increasing creativity, dreams, hopes, and imaginations and even academic performances of our children.

On Thursday night, I attended one of their fundraisings at the Record Parlour, a vintage vinyl shop and lifestyle store in Hollywood, as the event was celebrating Duane Allman’s music and legacy with an all-star line-up. First, Adopt the Arts house band Disreputable Few started the night with a few covers of the Allman Brothers’ famous Southern rock bluesy songs, and they sure put the room in the mood for more with long psychedelic and jazzy jams. The quartet consists of professional musicians, Mark Tremalgia and Randy Ray Mitchell on guitars and vocals, Paul Ill on bass and vocals and Dan Potruch on drums, who have worked and recorded with top artists such as Joe Walsh, Tina Turner, Alicia Keys. Donna Summer, Courtney Love, Donna Summer, Joe Walsh, Daniel Lanois, Keb Mo, Mick Taylor, Annie Lennox, Joe Perry, Warren Zevon…. And of course, their renditions could not have been more spot on

After a few songs, they were joined by two women, vocalists Robyn Kirmsee (who has worked with Eric Clapton, Joe Walsh, Macy Gray) and Gia Ciambotti (who was Bruce Springsteen’s backing vocalist and has worked with Natalie Cole, Lucinda Williams, Chicago) brought a lot of soul in the mix. It was a real treat to watch them harmonize together. Soon two other high-standard musicians were added to the already large ensemble, Grammy and W.C. Handy award winning saxophonist Joe Sublett (who has worked with countless legends such as B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Bette Midler, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Buddy Guy), and Conon O’Brien Show’s trumpeter Mark Pender (who also has a resume to kill for which included David Bowie, Joe Cocker, They Might Be Giants, Diana Ross)… They even played a cover of the Beatles’ ‘Hey Jude’… But why a Beatles cover during an Allman tribute show you may ask? Simply because Duane Allman suggested to Wilson Pickett they record a cover of the famous Beatles’ song and the single went to number 23 on the national charts!

Meanwhile, a silent auction was going on, featuring rock & roll memorabilia including Allman Brothers Band signed Fender guitar, a Crosby Stills Nash and Young giant boxset, a Guns ‘N’ Roses bass Head Drum signed by Matt Sorum, a Megadeth ‘Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying?’ lithograph, and I left when they were announcing the winners… The last song (‘The Weight’) was performed with another very special guest, singer Brooklyn Allman, daughter of Duane’s brother Gregg Allman… The tall blonde had quite a stage presence (and if you were wondering, yes she is in a rock band herself, Picture Me Broken) as she had big shoes to fill, since the original song features Aretha Franklin.

Co-founded by former Guns n’ Roses drummer, Matt Sorum, and supported by many celebrities, Adopt the Arts organizes many events like this one throughout the year, and big rock stars such as Slash, Duff McKagan, Billy Gibbons, Matt Sorum and Richie Sam Sambora have participated in past events. Its free, although a donation is of course encouraged…It’s always a great night for a great cause.
