A New Los Angeles Company Combines Vinyl And MixTapes

There are still people who want to beat the streaming craze, there are still people who come up with original ideas to beat the system, as if it was possible to beat the system. Vinyl Moon is a mixtape vinyl club, a new record club which allows you to discover new bands every month and listen to them on vinyl. Every record jacket is designed just for Vinyl Moon by visual artists, which doesn’t spoil anything.

So this is what you can receive if you decide to pay the $30 month-to month subscription, or a little less if you subscribe for 3 or 6 months: Each volume sent to you will include a curated mix of 10 songs by great new bands/musicians, pressed on limited edition colored vinyl, with a record jackets designed by visual artists, a postcard or stickers for each song that features band info and single artwork, a note about the music, art, and that month’s experience, and a VIP access to the monthly record release party (held in different cities). Of course, each record has a limited production and could potentially become a piece prized by collectors.

This Los Angeles-based young company is reusing the old concept of a mixtape with several twists, it’s on vinyl and the songs come from relatively obscure and unknown indie artists and bands.

Vinyl Moon creator Brandon Bogajewicz, who runs the website The Burning Ear, explained this during an interview with the LA Weekly: ‘You’ve got to convince people to go vinyl over streaming and what [the artwork and packaging] is saying is, ‘We made this for you.’ To capture our audience, we have to make it feel special.’

Vinyl Moon was funded with a very successful Kickstarter campaign earlier this year – the project earned $8,500 more than their $10,000 goal – and Volumes 1,2 and 3 have already sold out. Bogajewicz got the idea during the summer of 2014, while listening to 7-inches of almost unknown bands, ‘I wished somebody would just take all these 7-inches from upcoming bands and put them into a full-length record,’ he said. ‘And usually when you think, ‘I wish somebody would do something,’ it’s not stuff that you can actually do. But I was like, ‘Hey, I actually might be one of the better people to do that.’’

Who would have thought that an old idea like this one (Bogajewicz was making mixtapes in high school) would be a success in 2015? 700 people will received volume 3 in November. Each volume has a different mood, reflecting all the facets of the indie world.

Vinyl Moon seems to combine many aspects of what certain people, who are still interested by owning a object, are looking for: the uniqueness, diversity, and originality of an object.

‘You’re not hitting shuffle, you’re not adjusting the volume, and you’re not checking your email,’ said Bogajewicz. ‘It’s a different way of consuming music. You can truly digest it for yourself without having it be part of some hyperbolic Buzzfeed headline or some celebrity playlist on Beats 1.’ May be he is onto something, and as long as people will consume vinyl, it’s an idea that may work. Obviously, we are still far from the millions of Spotify users, but that may never be the goal of Vinyl Moon.

Thanks for the great write up Alyson! You are right, millions is not the goal. Just exciting to build a small but passionate community.
