58% Of People 8 – 18 Listen To Music Every Day

According to “Common Sense”, a website that “rate, educate, and advocate for kids, families, and schools”  (here), 58% of children aged 8 to 18 listen to music every single day and what is more, their criteria for what constitutes listening to music is screwy:  ” Listening to music includes all time spent listening to music downloaded to a computer, tablet, iPod, smartphone, or other MP3 player, through a service such as iTunes; streamed through an app or a service such as Pandora or Spotify on a computer, tablet, iPod Touch, or phone; on a radio, such as a car radio, transistor radio, or stereo system; or on CDs. Watching music videos is counted in “online videos.” Translation is that they didn’t include the most popular way people get their music fix: Youtube.

That is about the same amount as watch television and what is more:

” On any given day, American  teenagers (13- to 18-year-olds) average about nine hours (8:56) of entertainment media use,
excluding time spent at school  or for homework. Tweens (8- to  12-year-olds) use an average of  about six hours’ (5:55) worth
of entertainment media daily”

Let’s just keep with music. If two thirds of all people 8 to 18 listen to music on a daily basis NOT INCLUDING YOUTUBE, that means far from being in retreat, music is at the forefront of all children’s lives. And this is something that puts a damper on my generations claims that music doesn’t matter any more. Obviously, music still matters very very much even if my generation doesn’t care any more.

The death of album sales has nothing to do with a disinterest in music and everything to do with music distribution. Adults today believe the time when music was the soundtrack for people’s lives are over but if 58% AT A BARE MINIMUM (if you add videos the number would jump to 75% easily) listen to music as a part of their daily lives, that simply isn’t true.

Videos are included in television, so it is hard to really figure an accurate number of either medium, but also keep in mind that kids certainly multi task to music, but even so I think we can all agree that news of music’s irrelevance to modern society is wilding exaggerated.
