2021: The Year Live Music Died… Again…

In February 2020 I was seeing the (Allman) Brothers at MSG, in March 2020 live music stopped. In April 2021 I was still watching Steve Earle live streaming, in May I was at the new City Winery to catch John Mulaney stand-up. From there till December 20th 2021 I went to plenty of shows…. Governors Ball, Bruce On Broadway (Twice), Funkadelica at Forest Hills, Foo Fighters reopening MSG, Bright Eyes at Forest Hills, Central Park reopening of concerts (an unmitigated disaster of course), Yemi Alade at LPR, the LetMeHelp, Inc 9-11 Benefit with SohoJohnny, Angelique Kidjo at Carnegie Hall, Jingle Ball 2021, and more and then… nothing.

All my plans for the end of the year either they cancelled (The Strokes, Phish) or I did (City Winery need both the booster and the negative test -who has the time even for AImee Mann). And so back to the future test we go.

The best show of the year? Kidjo is my bet though Cordae at Gov Ball was excellent, and Lil Nas X was an entire thrill.

But the sudden ending of it all is just like a bad memory. It is 2020 again and we are if not entirely isolated, entirely isolating.

What now? How is Broadway gonna weather this? How about sports?

2021 was always going to be a worst year ever for me, due to the loss of my nephew and brother-in-law, but now it is the worst year ever plus the return of 2020…. it was great going back to concerts and now we wait.
