– Women in r&b took off from the Knowles sister and added art to sex, slow burns to ambient lo fi Drake like mood music, and changed r&b, and then added a Lana Del Rey suicide watch stuff, and changed pop. Halsey to Charli XCX to Dej Loaf to Kehlani to K. Michelle to Kelela to Tove Lo and beyond, the sound of pop was quiet with just drum beats and moog wash.
– The Class of 2010: Lost their standings. Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Pink, Jay Z, Sam Smith… none of them could sustain a recording career, well, except Taylor.
– Club Music – morphed into EDM and fell flat as a pancake. Bassnectar and Calvin Harris and couldn’t even get their remixes together.
– Emo Trap went black and white and drugged all over and drugged themselves to oblivion but sounded great on their last legs. RIP Lil Peep, get it together XXXtentacion
– Rap – rapping on rap songs has never mattered least and sounded worse, the songs, hip hop songs, are great, but the rappong? Not so fast…
– Trap lead all of pop in 2017, Southern gangsters were world beaters, Atlanta lead everyone.
– Country went back in its shell as “we are country” became a fence with The Donald the poster boy and the survivors of the horrendous slaughter in Vegas, leaving Jason Aldean and the entire old Grand Opry on a state of shock. The music got more heartfelt without getting even slightly better.
– Latin American pop is having its moment, Lin-Manuel Miranda changed the face of Puerto Rico (the one the President then spat at), and Luis Fonsi lead a charge that began with Justin Bieber (who went two for three) and moved onto Demi Lovato, Meanwhile J Balvin hooked up with Beyoncé. Balvin’s latest single (actually MC Fioti’s) adds future to the sound. Bad Bunny invented Latin Trap.
– Suicides: In rock and roll, real suicides happened. Chris Cornell followed by Chester Bennington. Both married men with teenage children.
Names To Watch: Bad Bunny, Kah-La, Kelela, Lucy Decus, Riton, serpentwithfeet (I called him out last year but maybe now the Bjork remix will do the job)
