– Need A Friend – El Vy – As the business of rock writing devolves into the business of pull quotes for popstars, I have been less than shocked over the raves on this ghastly vanity banality project. This is a terrible song, a brood bore not even good enough to be really bore – C
– Albert Eyes – British Sea Power – Do you get the sense the band name is an in joke? This is a lovely Elbow-y horn heaven blasting art rocker – B+
– Lapsed Catholics Need Discipline – Night Birds – OK, we got the point. Got anything else? – B-
– Deep Purple – James Moody – Nice one, three minutes of jazz flute, great moving on in the melody, everything saluting it only, this is just plain lovely – A
– I Shall Rise (from “Rise Of The Tomb Raider”) – Karen O – Theme from a PC action and adventure game that is neither action filled nor adventurous – C+
– Drowning Shadows – Sam Smith – Written for the album, Sam wasn’t pleased with the production and now, rearranged and reproduced, it sounds a little bigger than the album tracks, it fits, but not perfectly. Just piano, building up. One thing, that falsetto is pretty devastating. It doesn’t really lose me till the strings come in – B+
– 1/22 P – The I Don’t Cares – Man, this is NOT A GOOD idea. Less than 5,000 streams on Spotify, for a dumbass singalong nursery rhyme track. A real disappointment – C
– I’ll Show You – Justin Bieber – Of the three I’ve heard, this is my favorite from the new one. But all three of them are state of the pop art and the album is gonna be huge: this is a sound smorgasbord. Skrillex works so well with this guy – B+
– Sweet Thames, Flow Softly – Rufus Wainwright, Martha Wainwright – Another great Ewan MacColl song, they do a more than reasonable job of making it sound French – B+
– Going To A Show – Craig Finn – Nice slide – B
