– How Will I Know – Whitney Houston – Sure the beats are cheesy and the synth plastic, but this is a joyous new low in his kiss with every hope in the world in its joyous burst at the bridge – A

– How Will I Know – Sam Smith – A dirge of pure anxiety, there is no background singers advising Sam to “trust his feelings” -the song is fraught with a dread, almost the dread of Whitney leaving us. It works as a memento mori – A

– Love Is A Losing Game – Sam Smith – Similar trick with Amy, but Amy is a little more difficult to pull off – B+

– Absolutely Sweet Marie, Alternate Take 1 – Bob Dylan – Nearly there, though nothing new is revealed – B+

– If You Think You’re Lonely Now – Bobby Womack – Wait until tonight, girl – A

– Freefall – Armin van Buuren and BullySongs – Easy listening EDM, but that’s trance’s schtick, still the song is catchy enough and it is the best on his new album – B+

– Free Fallin – Tom Petty – One of his masterpiece slices of Americana – A

– Antidote – Travis Scot – His first self contained hit it is hook monster of a chorus verse

– Who’s Gonna Help Brother Get Further – Lee Dorsey – No ding dong but this was the hit – B+

– Southern Nights – Allen Toussaint – In which the master breaks pop – A
