10 Songs: Thursday, May 10th, 2016

hqdefault

1 – The Trolley Song – Judy Garland – Off “Meet Me In St. Louis”, it has a burst of complete innocence and budding desire, a sort of jumping into love with his hand in hers. The zing dings are an electrifying hook – A+

2 – These Dreams Of You – Van Morrison – – Don’t ever think about it, this is such a benediction, so troubled and yet free of trouble, the Ray Charles line stands as pure magic – A

3 – The Man That Got Away – Judy Garland – Her signature is not simply the story of her love life, it is also the gay siren cal for generations of same sexers, and a vocal tour de force that stands alone – A+

4 – I Took A Pill In Ibiza – Mike Posner – Heartbreaker and true song about the rock and roll life circle… sad stuff – A

5 – Real Friends – Kanye West – Brilliant sound, those drums echo with dream, and within its limitations, a great lyric – A

6 – No More Parties In LA – Kendrick Lamar – As much as I love the new Lamar album, his rap here is superior to anything on it – A

7 – Facts – Kanye West “The story of my lifetime…” – A-

8 – Get Money – Junior M.A.F.I.A. –  the hook of a lifetime and words to live by – A

9 – Flava In Your Ear (Remix) – Craig Mack – I loved this back in the day and how I missed this terrific version with a Biggie verse I can’t say … A

10 – Homecoming – Ray  LaMontagne – I dismissed the album last week but after reading Bob Lefset’s rave I thought, hey, maybe I got it wrong. Of course, my first mistake was listening to the deaf Lefset to start with – D
