– Voodoo In My Blood – Massive Attack, Young Fathers – Elder statesmen meets this years model, and I expected great things, but this is an obtuse, overlaid composition which brings out the best in no one. An oddity, with a good rap singsong, but it lacks a qualifying hook. Still, it is a grower – B+
– Volunteers – Jefferson Airplane – Their greatest moment, they were so young, pretty and up against the wall. Was the world ever really like that? – A+
– Drive – Yanni – Music to paper your living room with – C-
– Don’t Wanna Be Your Girl – Wet – A beauty of a song, one of the year’s best pop moments and a true glory – A
– Open All Night – Bruce Springsteen – writing so much about The River yesterday, but this is more poetic than anything on the double: I met Wanda when she was employed behind the counter at the route 60 Bobs Big Boy fried chicken on the front seat she’s sittin’ in my lap we’re wipin’ our fingers on a Texaco roadmap. I remember Wanda up on scrap metal hill with them big brown eyes that make your heart stand still.”
– Down By The Swinging Sea – Walter Martin – Clicky clacky UK folk, really nice hook but the voice drags me – C+
– Bitter – UXO, Chris Spencer, Steve Austin – Not terrible hardcore but it starts off as really good hard rock and then degenerates – C+
– Hear Me – Tedeschi Trucks Band – Best song on the newbie, they lose me when they perform blues jam on record, this is a soul song.
– Ashes – Saul Williams – Alyson was asking me if I knew this guy following her rave review. I didn’t but I will now – B+
– Dancing On Glass – St. Lucia – Not unpleasant old school disco – B
