In 1978, after a decade in the spotlight, Cat Stevens decided to walk away from his superstardom. He would release one final album under that name, the appropriately-titled Back To Earth. While Stevens’ legions of fans were saddened by the news, the singer himself was exhilarated by the prospect of moving into the next stage of his being. “It was like going back to my original nature,” he reflected at the time. “Back to wide-eyed childhood again.”
In May 2019, Back To Earth is to be reissued in various formats on Cat-O-Log Records/BMG, including a 6 Disc, 2LP Deluxe Boxset featuring the original album (remastered at Abbey Road), along with demos, unreleased tracks, and material from UNICEF’s 1979 Year Of The Child concert, the singer’s last live performance as Cat Stevens.
Back To Earth is an essential landmark in Cat’s career and upon its original release the album received rave reviews. Billboard applauded its “tender, folksy ballads [and] up-tempo and spirited pop tunes”, Hot Press hailed it as “a lush and intricately woven tapestry of fine melodies…really a return to form.”, and The London Evening News summed up the general feeling when stating, “Cat has come up with the kind of quality album that originally made him a superstar.”
Back To Earth will be available on a 6 Disc 2LP Super Deluxe Box Set, Deluxe 2 CD, CD, Vinyl & Coloured Vinyl.
