What Is Behind The #FreeBritney Movement?
I have never followed Britney Spears’ career, but I got the chance to see her residency at Las Vegas with Iman in 2016, when we were there to see the Stones and they canceled the show at the last minute. We both reviewed her show (here and here), a perfectly executed extravagant Las Vegas routine, but since that time, I haven’t really read anything about her.
Like everyone else, I just remember the sad episode in 2007, when she seemed to have a complete meltdown and shaved her head in a Tarzana salon,… but looking at all the current #FreeBritney hashtag on Twitter, looking at the recent petition on Change.org (just one-week-old) which has already amassed 110,000 signatures and counting, it is obvious that something sinister is going on in the life of the pop princess.
The petition reads: ‘Since 2008 Britney Spears has been held in a conservatorship, this gives her conservator full control over her life, body and finances/estate. Conservatorships are typically used for SEVERELY mentally ill individuals or people in comas. Having been on 3 world tours with dangerous flying and fire stunts, it’s safe to say she is sane enough to feed and clothe herself. With this conservatorship, she is unable to properly fight for her freedom as she isn’t legally allowed to hire her own lawyer. We need this petition so that Britney can hire her own lawyer and live a normal life as a 38-year-old woman with two kids.
Britney is deemed mentally stable enough to tour the world 3 times since 2007, but not to hire her own lawyer? We need Britney Spears to be deemed mentally stable enough to hire her own lawyer.’
There has been a lot of literature and article about Britney’s health and the conservatorship, she has been under since 2008! This means that, at 38, she still has no control of her finances and her daily life because of her so-called mental illness. This thread on Twitter by Jeremy Ray has a good timeline of the events. According to an article published by the Blast in May 2020, the court papers revealed that her father, Jamie Spears, has claimed that Britney had dementia at the time of her break down (2007).
I am quoting the article: ‘Underneath the header ‘DEMENTIA POWERS,’ the aforementioned ‘Probate Code Section 2356.5 allows conservators to request particularly strong powers if the conservative allegedly suffers from dementia. If the conservatee has a dementia-related illness, the conservator may be empowered to place the conservatee in a locked-door institution and to authorize the administration of medications appropriate to the care of dementia.’’
The court papers are even visible on some websites and social media. A person in her 20s doesn’t have dementia and dementia doesn’t allow anyone to have a residency in Las Vegas with 3 or 4 shows a week that require intense choreography!
According to the collection of articles in this thread, it seems that Britney’s life has been some sort of nightmare dominated by a very controlling father, who has even threatened her to take her kids away in 2009. Britney hasn’t been allowed to use a cell phone on a regular basis and hasn’t been able to choose her own lawyer.
The sordid story doesn’t even stop there. An anonymous voice mail (but verified) on Twitter, posted by a paralegal working for an attorney (see below) has revealed that her father canceled her show when he found out she was refusing to take her medications. She was supposed to launch her second Las Vegas residency show, ‘Britney: Domination,’ and her father allegedly told her to blame the cancellation of the residency on his illness, as this Instagram post demonstrates. The reason was very different: she was allegedly held against her will in the mental facility since January 2019.
Knowing about her father’s abusive control over her life (she apparently is not even allowed to drive a car), her fans have started questioning if her posts on Instagram were legitimate (or posted by other people) and, feeling the worst, they have started the #FreeBritney movement as they are supposing she is detained against her will. The Blast (once again), which is speculating on the meaning of her last posts despite Britney saying she is happy, has even revealed that her father had allegedly abused her 13-year-old son and that ex-husband Kevin Federline had filed a police report last September.
It’s still unbelievable to me that a 38-year-old pop star with such a successful career is still held in a conservatorship. Conservatorship limits extremely a person’s rights: ‘the conservatee loses many civil rights most of us take for granted. He or she may lose the right to decide where to live or what medical treatment to accept or refuse. They may lose the right to control their assets or manage their income.’ This is meant for people who have serious mental health issues or for aging persons with dementia, and this is obviously not the case with Britney who has released 4 albums, has done several world-wide tours and a 4-year Las Vegas residency since her 2007 meltdown
Last night, someone named Andrew Gallery who has worked with Britney as a photographer, even read and commented letters from Britney Spears via TikTok written at the time of her divorce. And the letter reveals what a nightmare Britney Spears’ life always has been, as she said to have been constantly lied and threatened: ‘if she brings it up, she’s constantly threatened that her conservators will take her kids away,’ says the handwritten letter that was curiously written at the third person.
There are obviously a lot of reasons to worry about Britney Spears right now, and behind her beautiful (and fake) Instagram page filled with designer clothes, glamor selfies, cats, roses, and workouts at the gym, there is a lot of drama and outrageous control by an abusive father. She has a court date coming up to review the conservatorship. #FreeBritney indeed.

So let’s try to understand, on January 31, 2008 signs a petition to be appointed as Britney’s conservatorship, he claims Britney has dementia & need a GENERAL conservatorship, he is asked to provide a “capacity declaration” by a licensed physician before the hearing #FreeBritney pic.twitter.com/qt8O3uYXmS
